The Tallahassee standout names the Knights his current frontrunner after a successful campus visit, potentially securing vital secondary depth as UCF prepares for a massive veteran exodus.
The UCF Knights' official visit experience has left a lasting impression on recruits, and it's no different for three-star defensive back Tyler Walker Jr.
Walker Jr. views UCF as a frontrunner in his recruitment, as he completes his campus tour and interaction with the players and coaching staff. He told MagicRoundtable and Knights247 reporter Andrew Cherico that he's "leaning toward UCF right now."
Landing a commitment from the Tallahassee native would be significant for the Knights. They would add another in-state recruit to their 2027 class and bolster the senior-laden defensive back room.
He holds offers from schools Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Colorado and Georgia Tech. Coastal Carolina received his commitment on March 24, but he de-committed two months later.
The three-star defensive back plays for Rickards High School. He recorded 30 tackles, two sacks, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one interception in his junior campaign. Walker Jr. displayed lockdown traits in his sophomore year with eight pass breakups.
UCF targeting another defensive back is crucial to prevent a massive position overhaul when the seniors depart. Nine players' eligibility will expire after next season, and most of them are experienced, talented leaders of the group.
Eight defensive backs on the roster could remain at UCF in 2027. That number rises to 10 with commitments from Kash Kolbow and Jonathan Barnes.
If Walker Jr. commits, he will become the third defensive back in the recruiting class and the 11th rostered position player in 2027. Depth at such a senior-laden position group is important.
Coach Scott Frost and his coaching staff have made good first impressions on recruits during their official visits and are making the last weekend worth it. Alongside Walker Jr., they are hosting Las Vegas quarterback Thaddeus Thatcher and in-state punter/kicker James Reynolds.
Thatcher had a mid-week visit in Orlando after touring his hometown campus, UNLV, and before traveling to Michigan. He and his father have set his commitment date for next Friday.
Reynolds has a powerful leg, averaging 56.2 yards on kickoffs and 41.2 yards on punts. He converted 48-for-57 field goals for Venice High School. If he commits, he'd learn under special teams coordinator Pete Alamar.
UCF is closing out the last official visit strong, attempting to bolster its defensive back room with a commitment from Walker Jr. The program has made a strong impression on him, as he views the school as a frontrunner.
