Despite a tough tournament exit, Dawkins' decade-long tenure and historic season fuel speculation about his future and a potential UCF contract extension.

Coach Johnny Dawkins’ tenure with the UCF Knights is uncertain after their season-ending loss to the UCLA Bruins on Friday night, but regardless of the outcome, Dawkins views Orlando as his second home.

This season marked Dawkins’ 10th year leading the Knights basketball program. Similar to his four years in Philadelphia playing for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1989 to 1994, Dawkins connected with the Orlando community and grew fond of them.

“You guys know I love UCF,” Dawkins said in his postgame press conference. “I’ve been here for over a decade. So, it’s been my home, or second home basically.”

Although he expressed his love for Orlando, Dawkins said he only thought about winning Friday’s matchup against UCLA. The Knights fought hard against the Bruins, raining three-pointers to make it a one-possession game, but 11 missed free throws became their ultimate downfall.

A first-round exit defines UCF’s NCAA Tournament run, but it does not overshadow the historic season Dawkins led them to.

Dawkins’ squad dominated non-conference opponents, finishing with an 11-1 record — their lone loss coming at the hands of the No. 16-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. UCF struggled in Big 12 play, finishing with a 9-9 record, but it’s an improvement from its 14-24 record in the team’s first two years in the conference.

A 20-10 finish to the regular season, which projected the Knights to make the NCAA Tournament likely, sparked discussions about a possible extension for Dawkins. UCF’s first-round loss weighed heavily on Dawkins, but he remained confident that the contract extension discussion would resolve itself.

“The bottom line is, right now, I’m still getting over a tough game, hard-fought loss that we just had,” Dawkins said. “Those things will take care of themselves, I’m sure.”

In 10 seasons coaching UCF, Dawkins amassed a 189-132 record and led the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He’s accounted for over 80% of the Knights’ upset of AP Top-25 opponents. highlighting his ability to compete against the best teams in the nation.

Dawkins’ future at the helm is uncertain. Still, UCF’s historic season, followed by an NCAA Tournament appearance may have earned him a chance at extending and continuing to lead the charge for the foreseeable future.
