UCF's star wideout Duane Thomas Jr. earns top-10 Big 12 ranking. His refined skills promise explosive plays and a dominant offensive threat.
Duane Thomas Jr. is entering next season more polished and ready to take on the lead wide receiving role for the UCF Knights. His potential ascension places him as a top-10 lead wide receiver in the Big 12.
CFBudge, on X, posted his 2026 Big 12 wide receiver one power rankings last Friday. Thomas Jr. made his appearance on the list as the ninth-best number one option on the graphic.
The 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior finished higher than Baylor's Dre'Lon Miller and lower than Utah's Braeden Pegan. He was the Knights' team leader in receptions (53) and receiving yards (528) despite not recording any touchdowns.
Wide receiver coach Sean Beckton Sr. said he's proud of Thomas Jr.'s development as a route runner, beating his defenders and being more patient at the route's peak.
"I'm proud of him because he's a lot more patient at the top of his routes," Beckton said on April 18. "He's doing a better job of winning at the top of the route. Last year, I thought when I broke him down, watched all this film, Austin Herink and myself, we looked at him, he was just sometimes he was really too quick. He didn't win the route at the top. So a little bit more patience because his speed and quickness are one of the things that he has. And I want him to understand, 'Hey, win at the top, and then that means you're going to be more open,' because of his size, he's got to create a little bit more separation at the top. So, that's one of the things we worked on. I've seen it in practice."
Thomas Jr. will lead the wide receiver core, alongside Waden Charles Jr., Monmouth transfer Josh Derry and Louisiana Monroe transfer Jonathan Bibbs as the other receivers lined up with him.
Starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III will have a versatile target and gadget player to throw to next season, as Thomas Jr. was the favorite receiver for the other UCF quarterbacks who had reps throughout last season.
The Miami Gardens, Florida, native is working on becoming a more detailed route runner to maximize his skills in the passing game, and that ascension has placed him among some of the best wide receivers in the Big 12.
