The UCF Knights prepare to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Saturday, but remain with a serious question: who will be the starting quarterback? Last week, against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, Scott Frost went with Cam Fancher to begin the match. He didn't look confident in his limited time on the field. The redshirt senior completed five of nine passes for 32 yards.
In the second quarter, Fancher took a hit and was out for the rest of the game. After a two-hour rain delay, Tayven Jackson took over the offense and showcased tremendous talent and confidence. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns.
After a final score of 17-10, the Knights begin their season with a strong and wet victory.
In a recent presser, Frost provided a minor update on Fancher.
"Cam didn't have a concussion," he said. "He had an issue with his back and pain in his leg. Last I heard, he was still feeling a bit tender. Everything with that is to be determined."
Frost added that he isn't shy to go deep into the depth chart and use multiple players from each position, including quarterback. He admired Jackson's mentality and preparation after receiving the news that it was his time for action on the field.
"He went in and didn't have an issue with the plays we were running and handling everything," he said. "He stepped into a tough situation and played well under pressure."
Frost needs to proceed with caution about the quarterback situation moving forward, especially with Fancher. He's dealt with serious injuries over the last couple of years. Fancher played through a left leg injury during the 2023 season with Marshall. The following year, with FAU, he suffered a broken clavicle then was ruled out for the rest of the season after nine games.
Jackson may not have the experience of being a starting quarterback, like Fancher, but he showed a takeover mentality against Jacksonville and proved to fit in well alongside the other starters.
Frost is all about putting the team in the best position to win week by week. At the current moment, Jackson has proven he can deliver for the Knights. He threw the game-winning touchdown to wide receiver DJ Black on third down.
It is a small sample size, but Jackson appears to be the best fit to lead the Knights' offense heading into their week two matchup.
