Alex Grinch’s unit leads the conference in takeaways through relentless pressure, suffocating secondaries and a commitment to hunting the ball.
The UCF Knights have built a strong case as an elite Big 12 defense and put together their best performance last Saturday.
UCF generated a season-best four turnovers in its 21-13 conference home opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. The front seven frequently pressured quarterback Jaden Craig, and the secondary held him under his 70% completion average.
Jayden Bellamy started the game with the infamous "peanut punch," forcing wide receiver Ed Smalls to fumble on TCU's third play of the first drive.
Braeden Marshall recovered the fumble and returned it for three yards. Marshall's recovery put the Knights in Horned Frogs' territory, and they capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown run from Taevion Swint.
Bellamy secured his second takeaway in the second quarter, intercepting Craig. He trailed tight end Ka'Morreun Pimpton and jumped the passing, diving for his first interception of the season.
Jeffson Lafontant pressured Craig in the fourth, hurrying his pass, and Antione Jackson caught the game-sealing interception to secure UCF's first Big 12 home opening victory.
Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the defense have preached that creating turnovers is their identity. They've done a stellar job living up to those expectations, ranking first in interceptions (six), sixth in forced fumbles (three) and second in fumble recoveries (three).
Lafontant said it felt amazing to make such a significant impact in conference play, and all 11 defenders are committed to generating turnovers.
"We always make sure we get 11 to the ball, punching the ball, trying to punch it out, scoop it out, like do something to get the ball out," Lafontant said in his postgame press conference. "It's never over until the whistle blows."
Grinch is a proponent of takeaways since they often influence the outcome. UCF started last year well by generating seven turnovers in four games, but struggled the rest of the season.
The Knights failed to force turnovers in losses to the Kansas Jayhawks, Cincinnati Bearcats, Brigham Young Cougars and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
UCF's loss to Kansas is an example of Grinch's philosophy.
Former Knights quarterback Tayven Jackson fumbled after getting sacked, and the Jayhawks recovered the fumble at the two-yard line. The Jayhawks scored off the turnover, ultimately winning 27-20.
The defense has proven it can hold potent offenses under their averages. They held the Pittsburgh Panthers to 12 points after scoring 59 points in Week 1 and TCU to 13 after averaging 36.3 points in non-conference play.
Being a top Big 12 defense in turnovers is a promising sign for the Knights in conference play. It gives the offense multiple chances to score and overcome struggles stringing together long drives.
