The dual-threat playmaker brings veteran stability and James Madison pedigree to Orlando, fueling a family-driven culture aimed at returning the Knights to postseason prominence this fall.

Following his time at the 2026 Big 12 Media Days, UCF starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III took time to meet with the community, signing autographs and talking to fans at a meet-and-greet in Orlando.

"Its really nice," Barnett told Knights247's Andrew Cherico about the event. "When you put together an event like this, it shows the unity between the athletic programs and not only that, but just the connection between the athletic programs and the community that supports us."

Since arriving at UCF, Barnett has talked about the "home-like" aspects that the program has displayed, while saying the continuity between coaching staff and player is noticeable.

"I think, the No. 1 thing for me was the family atmosphere," Barnett said at the Big 12 Media Days. "That's something I value and I care about because you spend long hours in the facility together, so just knowing the people to the left and right of you care not only about you as a player, but as a person, that means the world to me."

Barnett, who is entering his final year of college football, should provide the Knights with the most stability at the QB position since John Rhys Plumlee years ago.

Throughout OTAs, Barnett dealt with lingering injuries, but the staff assured media that it was precautionary and the former James Madison standout will be a full-go for fall ball.

"I look forward to enjoying each and every game as it’s my last collegiate season…" Barnett said. "Fans can expect a great brand of football, some fireworks here and there and some really consistent play."

Last season, this was exactly what Barnett did for the Dukes, leading them to a College Football Playoff berth and shining in the first-round matchup.

Barnett impressed against a dynamic Oregon defense, scoring three total touchdowns while throwing for 273 yards passing and recording 45 yards rushing.

As a whole, James Madison scored 34 points, which is very impressive considering Oregon blanked the Big 12-Champion Texas Tech Red Raiders in the following round.

Now, with talented pass catchers at his disposal, Barnett should have no trouble building on last year's success and leading UCF back to bowl-game contention.

With his dual-threat ability, the new-look, 1-2 punch of Landen Chambers and Duke Watson in the backfield should also benefit, as defenses will have to respect Barnett's ability to use his legs.
