Georgetown had to have felt like a winner at the end of the first quarter Thursday night against the No. 1 UConn women.
They made four 3-point shots, and despite six turnovers, found themselves trailing the undefeated Huskies by just one point, 21-20.
And then UConn does what UConn usually does: overwhelm its opponent in the second quarter.
The Huskies bookended the second quarter with a pair of 11-0 runs at both the start and finish, outscoring the Hoyas 27-5 to take a commanding 48-25 lead en route to an 84-52 win at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn.
It was a half dominated by UConn’s stars. Azzi Fudd scored 13 of her 24 points in the first quarter, and Sarah Strong countered with 11 of her 13 points in the second.
It was the 43rd consecutive game with 10-plus points for Strong. UConn’s all-time leader in that category is Maya Moore, who achieved double-digit scoring in 53 games in a row.
The Huskies (30-0, 19-0) ramped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter after the Hoyas hit 46.2% of their shots in the first frame. Georgetown (13-15, 6-13) was held to 2-of-14 shooting (14.3%) in the second quarter as it fell to 6-59 all-time against UConn.
“I thought the first quarter we gave up a couple threes – they don’t usually make a ton of them, but they shot the lights out in the first quarter,” head coach Geno Auriemma told TNT Sports heading into the locker room at the half.
“I thought the second quarter we did a pretty good job of getting them to speed up, play a little bit faster. We rebounded better. I think the fact that we can substitute, keep bodies fresh out there really helps us. Then, obviously, we started getting some offense going and here we are.”
The Huskies forced 14 turnovers in the half and gave the ball away just four times for a net gain of 16 points off turnovers before the intermission. They had eight steals – three from freshman Blanca Quinonez – and three blocks.
Even with the big lead, UConn kept up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, outscoring the Hoyas 22-13 to take a 70-38 lead into the last quarter.
As is typical, Fudd and Strong sat out the fourth quarter, with Auriemma largely turning the game over to the reserves.
This was the final game of the regular season in Connecticut for the Huskies; they will host first- and second-round games in the Women’s NCAA Tournament. Fudd, in her final season of eligibility, gave the home fans something to cheer.
“They're always amazing,” Fudd told TNT Sports after the game about the fan support. “Something that's so special about being at UConn is that the crowd never fails to show up. The student section, the fans. They're amazing every single night.”
For the game, Fudd was 9-of-19 shooting (6 of 13 from 3-point range) with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
For the season, she is closing in on the coveted 50/40/90 mark. Including the Thursday game, Fudd is shooting 48.9% on field goals, 45.4% from 3-point range and 95% from the free throw line.
UConn has one final game –Sunday against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York – as it attempts to end the regular season undefeated.
Through their history, UConn has managed a perfect season six times and also has 12 national championships, including the title last season.
For the Huskies on Thursday, Ashlynn Shade added 12 points, Kayleigh Heckel scored 11 and Quinonez dropped in 10. Strong led the team with 11 rebounds and seven assists.
For the Hoyas, Summer Davis scored 12 points and Khadee Hession had 11. Destiny Agubata led Georgetown with 10 rebounds.
