Sarah Strong missed the first game of her UConn career on Saturday – a big win against Butler – with head coach Geno Auriemma giving her a day off to rest.
It showed Wednesday night as the No. 1 Huskies defeated fellow Big East member Creighton 94-44 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
A rested Strong scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the first half to lead UConn to a 42-24 halftime lead. From there, the Huskies (26-0, 15-0) outscored the Bluejays (12-13, 8-8) by 32 points in the second half to win big.
It was UConn’s sixth win by at least 50 points on the season.
Exactly one month ago, the Huskies defeated Creighton 95-54 in Omaha, Neb., dominating the first half and taking a 33-point lead into the locker room.
This game was the reverse.
After the half, UConn went on an 18-7 run to expand the lead to 60-31, using a pair of 3-pointers by Ashlynn Shade and two more from Azzi Fudd to fuel the surge. Eight of those points came in a 50-second burst.
Creighton finished the quarter on a scoring drought of just over five minutes. The Bluejays didn’t hit a field goal in the final 7:29 of the third quarter.
UConn ended on a 16-0 run over the final 4:38 of the quarter to lead 68-31 after three periods.
The Bluejays were 1-of-18 shooting in the third quarter and 4-of-17 in the fourth, finishing the game hitting just 22.6% (14 of 62) of their field-goal attempts.
Allie Ziebell led the Huskies with 20 points, hitting 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range. Fudd added 19 points. Strong, who leads the Huskies in all major statistical categories, played just five minutes in the second half as the bench took over; she finished with 16 points in 19 minutes.
Shade and Kayleigh Heckel also scored in double figures, putting up 13 points each.
UConn shot 57.1% (36 of 63) for the game, including 53.8% (14 of 26) from long distance.
For Creighton, Elizabeth Gentry scored a team-leading 12 points. Kennedy Townsend added 10.
For UConn, this was its 62nd consecutive win against a Big East opponent, including contests in the conference tournament. The Huskies have five games remaining in the regular season, all against conference foes, starting Saturday at Marquette.
They also will be on the road at Villanova (Feb. 18) and at St. John’s (March 1) and at home against Providence (Feb. 22) and Georgetown (Feb. 26).
The St. John’s game will be played at Madison Square Garden.
