Alex Karaban won his 116th game with the Huskies, setting the program record.

On a night when one UConn legend was celebrated, another player’s legacy was cemented in Storrs, Conn., on Saturday.

At halftime of No. 6 UConn’s 79-75 win over Georgetown, Hasheem Thabeet was added to the Huskies of Honor wall – the 24th UConn player to be so honored.

And Alex Karaban was part of his 116th career UConn victory (116-24) and made his 136th start – both numbers that broke program records.

In the end, it was Karaban who sealed the victory, seconds after the four-year starter made a crucial error that could have cost his team in a game he will never forget.

The Huskies (24-2, 14-1 Big East) couldn’t shake the Hoyas (13-12, 5-9) throughout.

UConn took a 41-33 lead after the first half, then got some separation by going up 49-35 with 15:20 remaining. It took Georgetown less than three minutes to pare the lead in half.

And every time the Huskies rebuilt the lead to double digits, the Hoyas answered, leading to a frenzied final minute.

Silas Demary Jr.’s free throw with 33 seconds to go put the Huskies up 77-70, but Georgetown’s KJ Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left and was fouled by Tarris Reed Jr. on the shot. The made free throw gave the Hoyas a four-point play and made it a one-possession game at 77-74.

With 14 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Karaban threw the ball away on the inbound pass. Georgetown took its final timeout, and Braylon Mullins fouled Kayvaun Mulready before he could get off a shot, sending him to the line for two shots.

He made the first and missed the second. Karaban got the rebound, was fouled and hit the game-clinching foul shots to secure the win for the team and set the record for victories by a UConn player.

Karaban scored 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4 of 6 from 3-point territory in a game-high 38 minutes.

Solo Ball led the Huskies with 20 points. Demary fell just short of a triple-double, scoring 15 points – he was 9 of 10 from the foul line – and had 12 rebounds and nine assists. Freshmen Mullins and Eric Reibe each scored 10 points.

For Georgetown, Lewis scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting and added a team-best nine rebounds. Vincent Iwuchukwu added 16 points and Mulready 15.

The Huskies moved to 12-0 against Georgetown during Dan Hurley’s tenure, but this season’s sweep certainly didn’t come easily. UConn squeaked out a 64-62 win against the Hoyas in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 17.

More on Karaban

The record 116 victories surpassed the record set last season by Samson Johnson, who played three seasons and won two national championships alongside Karaban. Jake Voskuhl held the record for starts. Karaban also leads active players at high-major programs in games played at one school.
