The Huskies were beaten by the Golden Eagles, finishing 17-3 in the league season.

The University of Connecticut men's basketball team was upended by Marquette in a surprising defeat on the last day of the Big East regular season on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.

The Huskies (27-4, 17-3), were beaten 68-62 by the Golden Eagles, who end their regular season at 12-19 and 7-13 in the conference.

Had the Huskies won, they would have earned a share of the Big East regular season title with St. John's. Instead, the Red Storm win the league outright and get the No. 1 seed in the Big East Tournament, which begins on Wednesday.

The Huskies are the No. 2 seed and will open tournament play on Thursday against the winner of the No. 7/10 game from Wednesday. The full tournament bracket has not been released as of this posting.

Here's what you need to know from Saturday's loss.

A tough day for team leaders

UConn didn't get the kind of scoring it usually gets from several top players: Senior Alex Karaban had just two points on 0-of-6 shooting while Solo Ball had eight points on 2-of-10 shooting. Freshman Braylon Mullins was just 4-of-15 from the floor and 1-of-10 from three-point range. He had nine points.

The trio had 19 points on just 6-of-31 combined shooting. They were 3-of-20 from three-point range.

Inside the numbers

--On the positive side of things offensively, Silas Demary had 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting and nine made free-throws. Tarris Reed Jr. had 16 points.

--The Huskies shot just 36 percent from the floor and 13 percent (3-of-24) from three-point range. They were 94 percent (17-of-18) at the foul line.

--UConn out-rebounded Marquette 40-25 in dominant fashion, but the Huskies committed 16 turnovers to 13 for Marquette.

--Four Golden Eagles were in double-figures, including Nigel James Jr., who had 19.

--Head coach Dan Hurley was ejected in the final seconds. With UConn down 64-62, Demary drove the lane and didn't receive a foul call. Hurley ran on the floor and made contact with an official, earning him a double-technical and the ejection.

Where's the bench?

It's hard to complain about the bench production when three key starters were all well-below their season averages, but it's worth bringing up that the bench had only 10 points for the Huskies. Jayden Ross had six points while Eric Reibe had four. Only eight total players played for the Huskies, meaning the team isn't going very deep as the NCAA Tournament approaches.

Big impact?

At 27-4 overall, the Huskies have had a great regular season, but did this loss just cost them a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament? It's possible, but the Big East Tournament will have a major impact on how the seeding shakes out.
