Huskies put on a show in their second game at the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase.
Another day, another dominant “W” for the No. 1 UConn women’s basketball team.
Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 24 points as they walloped Utah 93-41 at the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase in Uncasville, Conn., on Sunday. Freshman Blanca Quinonez had a career-high 21 points and Sarah Strong contributed 15.
The Huskies (6-0) outscored Utah 32-8 in the opening frame behind Fudd and Strong, who scored nine points each, and eight from Quinonez, with the team shooting 59.1%. The Utes (3-3) were just 2-of-13 shooting, both of the baskets from 3-point territory.
In the second quarter, UConn cooled down and Utah’s shooting improved, with the Huskies outscoring the Utes just 12-11 to take a 44-19 halftime lead.
After that, UConn wasn’t messing around.
In the third quarter, the Huskies hit every note offensive and defensively.
They shot 61.1% from the floor (11 of 18) and played swarming defense, forcing nine turnovers that they turned into 16 points. UConn ended the quarter on a 25-2 run, taking an incredible 73-24 lead against a power-conference team into the final quarter.
Blowout benefit
In the opening game of the two-game event, UConn played a thriller against No. 6 Michigan, squandering a 20-point lead early in the third quarter to squeak out a 72-69 win.
In that game, Strong played all 40 minutes, with Fudd on the court for 39 minutes and KK Arnold 37.
The blowout win gave UConn head coach Geno Auriemma a chance to rest his most-used players. Fudd’s 27 minutes were the tops of any starter.
And she was remarkable in her time on the court.
The grad student finished 9-of-11 shooting – 4-of-4 from long distance – and had eight rebounds to tie Serah Williams for the game high.
Lani White scored nine points to lead Utah.
UConn shot 53.7%, while Utah finished at 25.9%.
The Huskies dropped in 39 points on 24 turnovers, which included 15 steals, and scored 40 points in the paint compared to six for the Utes. UConn outrebounded Utah 41 to 32.
The game was played at the Mohegan Sun Arena, about 30 miles from UConn's campus in Storrs. The Huskies moved to a career 47-1 record in the building.
