New football coach Candle impressively put together a roster to play this upcoming season. Now, it's on to 2027.

UConn football coach Jason Candle and his staff are quickly filling the spring calendar, penciling in the names of Class of 2027 recruits they have lined up for visits to campus.

Five prospective Huskies recently announced via their social media pages that they have set official visits to Storrs, Conn.

They include quarterback Ben Rolapp, who transferred from Darien High School to the Brunswick School in Greenwich for the fall 2025 season. He is the only Connecticut product scheduled to be among the known official visitors for the May 29-31 weekend thus far.

Other players confirmed for the May weekend are wide receiver Jamir Dean from Tennessee, linebacker Olrick Johnson from Georgia, and Floridians Larry Morgan and Damari Jerry, both from West Boca Raton.

Morgan is a cornerback and Jerry plays safety.

247Sports reported Hezikiah Kelley from Ohio would be present, too. On his Instagram account, Kelley listed UConn among a dozen schools he’s considering.

Running back Caleb Mattison and cornerback Carl Jones Jr., both from Florida, confirmed their official visits for June 12-14.

2026 recruiting in review

The Huskies hired Candle, the former head coach at Toledo, on Dec. 6 to replace Jim Mora. After leading the Huskies to a pair of nine-win seasons, Mora departed for the same role at Colorado State.

Mora’s departure spurred 16 UConn players to transfer with him, including linebacker Oumar Diomande, tight end Juice Vereen and quarterback Ksaan Farrar. In all, Mora added 35 transfers to the roster for the Rams, who are moving to the revamped Pac-12 and expected to be among the top tier of teams.

Candle came in with numerous holes to fill – those 16 transfers and players such as leading rusher Cam Edwards, who now is with Michigan State. In all, as of late January, Candle had recruited 66 players to Storrs.

It is almost an entirely new roster that will take the field for the Huskies when they open the season Sept. 5 against Lafayette at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

With Mora’s departure and all of those players following him, Candle and his staff went to work. In total, UConn added 56 transfers, with 19 following Candle from Toledo.

And 22 of them, in fact, came from the Power 4 conferences, with players from the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Southeastern and the Atlantic Coast conferences now all members of the Huskies roster.

Tennessee transfer Jake Merklinger, a four-star prospect in the high school Class of 2023, presumably is the preseason favorite to start at quarterback.
