The backup big man on the 2025-26 Huskies announced Monday that he is transferring to USC.
Former UConn center Eric Reibe announced his new home on Monday, posting to social media a photo of himself wearing the uniform of the Southern California Trojans.
The word "committed" was emblazoned on the picture.
The transfer of Reibe to head coach Eric Musselman's program at USC had been speculated for about a week, but the rumors grew in intensity after 7-foot-5 Trojans center Gabe Dynes announced on Friday that he had decided to enter the transfer portal.
The USC situation
With 6-foot-10 Jacob Colfie returning for his junior season at USC, Dynes didnāt have a path for considerable minutes in 2026-27. And with one year of eligibility remaining, he might want to find a school where substantial playing times appears to be a probability.
Colfie played in 32 games (all starts), averaging 9.9 points on 51% shooting, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 30.4 minutes per contest.
Will Colfie, a rising junior, be blocking the path for Reibe? That remains to be seen.
Reibe was a terrific understudy as a freshman for All-Big East center Tarris Reed Jr., in 2025-26, especially in the nonconference portion of the season for UConn.
The 7-1 Reibe played in all 40 games for the Huskies, starting five early in the season as Reed nursed an injury. He scored 15 points and added four rebounds and two blocked shots in a narrow loss to Arizona on Nov. 19. Four nights later, he recorded 16 points and six rebounds against Bryant.
In a season-high 31 minutes against Kansas on Dec. 2, Reibe score 12 points and tallied eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The UConn situation
Reed is gone to graduation. Reibe is gone. So is Rrezon Elezaj, another freshman center who saw just five minutes of game action on the recently completed season.
To fill the middle, UConn signed 6-foot-10, 265-pound Najai Hines, who appeared in 31 games off the bench and averaged 6.5 points, 5.5 steals and 2.2 blocks over 18.0 minutes per game for Seton Hall.
Per 40 minutes, those numbers extrapolate to 14.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 4.9 blocks.
He shot 60.2% from the field.
Head coach Dan Hurley and his staff still need to find a backup to play the post position. UConn also could use depth pieces, especially with Jaylin Stewart having entered the portal.
Where the UConn roster stands
Hurley currently has these players on the books for the 2026-27 season.
Returning players: Silas Demary Jr., Braylon Mullins, Jayden Ross
Transfers: Najai Hines (Seton Hall), Nikolas Khamenia (Duke)
High school class of '26: Junior County, Colben Landrew
Undeclared: Jacob Ross
Solo Ball will undergo wrist surgery and miss the entire season. That was announced on Monday.
