The 1998-99 women's hoop team lost in the Sweet 16, but they could really score.

The 1998-99 University of Connecticut women's basketball team got some company in history on Wednesday night, as noted by ESPN.

LSU is on a roll this season

The Tigers have scored 100 points 13 times this season, the most such games in a season since UConn did so in 1998-99.

The Tigers are currently 24-4 and 10-4 inside Southeastern Conference (SEC) play. They are vying for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and figure to be one of the key competitors for the unbeaten Huskies in March. LSU is ranked No. 6 in the nation.

LSU beat Missouri 108-55 to hit the achievement. Their high point total for the year is 126 against New Orleans on Dec. 7.

About the 1998-99 Huskies

--The team went 29-5 and 17-1 inside Big East play, winning both the Big East regular season and Big East tournament titles.

--Swin Cash and Sue Bird, who are both in the Basketball Hall of Fame, were just first-year players.

--Cash averaged 9.5 ppg while Bird averaged 5.1 and 3.1 assists.

--Svetlana Abrosimova was an All-American (2nd-team). She averaged 16.8 ppg and a conference best 2.7 steals per night. 

--Shea Ralph led the team in scoring at 16.8 ppg.

--UConn began the season 13-0 before suffering its first loss against Tennessee (92-81).

--The Huskies then also lost to Louisiana Tech, Boston College, and Old Dominion before losing to Iowa State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

--UConn won the national title the next season (1999-2000), the second title in program history.

About the modern day Huskies

The Huskies enter play on Thursday at 29-0 on the campaign and 18-0 within Big East play. Sarah Strong leads the conference in scoring (19.0 ppg) and steals (3.2), while Azzi Fudd (17.9) and Blanca Quinonez (10.2) also average double-figures.

The group will be back in action on Thursday against Georgetown (7 p.m. ET). It's the penultimate game of the regular season. UConn will finish up on March 1 against St. John's at Madison Square Garden.

--The UConn men's basketball team put a statement win together on Wednesday, destroying No. 15 St. John's 72-40. The Huskies held the Red Storm to 2-of-28 shooting in the second half in one of the best defensive performances you will ever see. The two teams split the regular season series and now own a share of the Big East lead.
