UCLA, South Carolina and Vanderbilt grabbed the other No. 1 seeds in a look at the tournament committee's early thoughts.

UConn is the top overall seed in the Women’s NCAA Tournament projection.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee gave a peek at its current thinking about the top 16 seeds for the upcoming tournament and slotted defending champion UConn, UCLA, South Carolina and Vanderbilt as the four No. 1 seeds.

UConn, UCLA and South Carolina are ranked Nos. 1 through 3 in the current Associated Press top 25 poll.

Vanderbilt, coached by UConn alum Shea Ralph, is ranked No. 5 and leapfrogged No. 4 Texas to capture the fourth top seed.

The Longhorns landed on the No. 2 line with Michigan, Louisville and LSU.

Ohio State, Iowa, Duke and TCU are No. 3 seeds in the projection, with Maryland, Michigan State, Ole Miss and Oklahoma as No. 4 seeds.

Again, these are just projections and could change before Selection Sunday on March 15.

“The committee is excited to share our current top 16 teams and give insight into our conversations,” said Amanda Braun, the athletic director at Milwaukee and chair of the committee, in a statement on Saturday. “This season, we’ve seen a high level of play across the country, and finalizing this ranking was a difficult task. With many significant regular season games and all conference tournaments ahead of us, there is still a lot of opportunity for movement.”

UConn (27-0) is the only undefeated team in the nation. The Huskies have beaten six ranked teams on the season – Louisville, Ohio State, Michigan, Southern California, Iowa and Tennessee – and sit atop the NET rating.

Tournament at a glance

All 68 tournament teams will be revealed on Selection Sunday, but on March 14 – the day before – the committee will release the identities of the top 16 teams. This is a first for the NCAA, which will list the schools alphabetically and without a seeding.

Those 16 teams will have the advantage of hosting first and second-round play in the tournament in their arena.

Action shifts to a neutral site for Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight play March 27-30. Two groups of four teams will compete at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, and the other half of the field will play at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif.

The Final Four will advance out of the regionals and to the national semifinals on April 3 at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix. The championship game will be held April 5.
