The Huskies will be heavy favorites when they meet 16th-seeded UTSA on Friday.
Head coach Geno Auriemma and his No. 1-ranked UConn team will hope to be showered with confetti again next month as champions of the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament.
The Huskies (34-0) were rewarded for their undefeated season with the No. 1 overall seed. They will open tournament against No. 16 seed UTSA (18-15) at Gampel Pavilion on their campus in Storrs, Conn. Tip-off time is 3 p.m. ET.
The Roadrunners won the American Conference tournament to claim its automatic bid. UTSA, the sixth seed in the tourney, defeated top-seeded Rice 54–40.
This UConn's 37th tournament appearance and the 15th time as a No. 1 seed in Auriemma's 41st season.
The Huskies were followed by the UCLA (31-1) -- the No. 2 overall seed -- then Texas (31-3) and the Longhorns' fellow Southeastern Conference member, South Carolina (31-3), as No. 1 seeds. The Longhorns defeated the Gamecocks 78-61 to win their first SEC tournament title.
No one is handing Auriemma and the Huskies their 13th national championship trophy just yet. They are led by sophomore Sarah Strong, the favorite for National Player of the Year, but the other top seeds bring strong credentials to the tournament.
UCLA’s only defeat of the season was a 76-65 loss to Texas on Thanksgiving Eve. The Bruins have won 25 consecutive games and have their own National Player of the Year candidate in senior center Lauren Betts.
If the Huskies defeat UTSA, they will meet the winner of the game between No. 8 Iowa State and No. 9 Syracuse. The victor of the second-round game advances to the Fort Worth Regional 1. Texas was placed in the other bracket that moves on to Fort Worth, giving the Longhorns what can be considered home games through the Elite Eight, should they keep winning.
UCLA and South Carolina are in the Sacramento regions.

The first four games will be played Wednesday and Thursday on the home court of the highest seed in the four-team pod. That way, the teams will be in place when the first round begins.
Seeds one through four in each region will host the first- and second-round games at their home arenas.
First-round games are set to be played Friday and Saturday, the second-round games are scheduled for March 22 and 23.
After that round, the 16 winners of each pod will qualify for the Sweet 16. Half of the teams will head to Fort Worth, Texas, and the other half to Sacramento, Calif. At each regional site, the teams will be divided into two brackets with the winner of each advancing to the Final Four.
Sweet 16 games will be played March 27 and 28, Elite Eight games March 29 and 30.
The Women’s NCAA Tournament will end with the Final Four in Phoenix. Semifinal games are set for April 3, with the title game on April 5.
