Luke Murray was named the head coach at Boston College on Thursday.

Boston College has tabbed one of Dan Hurley’s key assistants at UConn with the task of rebuilding its basketball program.

Luke Murray, who has spent nine seasons learning under Hurley, will take over an Eagles program that once was a semi-regular in the NCAA Tournament but has not earned a berth since the 2008-09 season.

In the 17 years since, Boston College has mustered only three seasons at .500 or above.

The school announced his hiring on Thursday.

Earlier this month, the school fired head coach Earl Grant, who had a 127-89 record in seven seasons at the College of Charleston before landing at Boston College in 2021. At the Chestnut Hill campus, his teams were 72-92 (31-67 Atlantic Coast Conference) and never finished higher than 10th place in the conference.

The past two seasons, the Eagles were a combined 23-39, with an ACC record of 8-30.

"Today marks a turning point in Boston College Men's Basketball," athletic director Blake James said in a school news release.

"In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball - he has helped define it. His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes. We are thrilled to welcome Luke, his wife, Kara, and their family to the BC community."

Luke Murray's background

Prior to his arrival at UConn in 2021, Murray served as an assistant coach at Wagner, Towson, Rhode Island, Xavier and Louisville. He was with Hurley at Wagner (2010-11) and Rhode Island (2013-15).

He has been heralded as a top-flight recruiter and known for his prowess on offense and player development. He was part of UConn’s two most recent national championship teams. The No. 2-seeded Huskies will play No. 3 Michigan State Friday night in the East Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in Washington, D.C.

Boston College did not announce a start date for Murray, but ESPN reported that Murray will remain with the Huskies until their tournament run ends.

The national championship game is set for April 6 in Indianapolis.

"I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men's Basketball program," Murray said in the news release. "BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!"

Murray, the son of actor Bill Murray, has lived in the Northeast most of his life. A New York native, Murray graduated from Fairfield in 2007 with a degree in sociology.
