The White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians on Monday afternoon to take a 2-0 series lead. Anthony Kay earned the start on the mound.
The Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Monday afternoon in Game 2 of the American League Division Series at Progressive Field.
With the win, the White Sox are now just one win away from advancing to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2005. The Guardians, who won the American League Central, are on the verge of elimination.
UConn Huskies baseball alum Anthony Kay served as the opener for the White Sox, tossing 0.1 innings and giving up one hit and one walk. He was charged with two runs, only one of which was earned. Though Kay didn't have a great line in this one, he does have a 3.86 ERA in these playoffs. He had tossed two scoreless innings in the wild card round against the Houston Astros.
Offensively, the White Sox were led by Braden Montgomery, who had a crucial two-RBI double to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.
About Kay
Now 31 years old, Kay is a six-year veteran of the majors, having pitched with the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and White Sox. After appearing in just 44 games from 2019-23, Kay spent the 2024-25 seasons in Japan before returning to the big leagues in 2026. With Chicago, he went 10-9 in 33 games (31 starts), posting a 4.44 ERA.
He struck out 129 batters in 158.0 innings, but his fastball made substantial gains, and he was able to hit in the mid-to-upper 90s. He's under contract through 2027 with a mutual option for 2028.

Kay spent two years with the Huskies before becoming a first round pick (No. 31) of the Mets in the 2016 MLB Draft.
In 2015, Kay went 8-5 with a 2.14 ERA, striking out 85 batters in 92.2 innings. In 2016, he went 9-2 with a 2.65 ERA, striking out 111 hitters in 119.0 innings. Hitters hit only .213 against him for his career.
He was a Second-Team All-American in 2016 and earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. He was also a First-Team All-Conference selection in 2015 and played on Team USA's Summer Collegiate team in 2015.
Up next for Kay and Co.
The White Sox and Guardians will be off on Tuesday as the series shifts to Chicago's Rate Field. First pitch on Wednesday for Game 3 is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
Since Kay only pitched 0.1 innings, he could appear as a reliever in this contest. It's also possible that Chicago uses an opener again, though Kay probably wouldn't get the assignment two games in a row.
