The University of Connecticut baseball team opens up its 2026 season on Friday night when it takes on Nebraska in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Huskies are coming off a 38-21 campaign that also saw them go 17-4 in the Big East. They were beaten by Creighton in the Big East tournament, but did win two games in the championships before being eliminated.
As you watch this version of the Huskies, make sure you are paying attention to the versatile Tyler Minick, who is certainly on MLB Draft radars as the season begins.
A junior from Pennsylvania, Minick is an infielder with a career .317 batting average. He played 54 games last season, hitting .350 with 22 homers and 74 RBIs, and he posted a .433 on-base percentage.
He was a second team All-Big East selection and put himself in the throws of the UConn record books.
As noted by UConn Athletics:
His 22 home runs is the second most in UConn single-season history (Mike Olt, 23, 2010). Tied for 8th nationally with the 22 long balls
Per the crew over at Overslot Baseball:
"Minick tore through the Big East as a sophomore, and he may not be done showing evaluators all he can do. Minick's speed has evaluators intrigued. He stole 15 bags in 2025, and posted an elite 6.25 60-yard dash time this fall...He clobbered 22 home runs in 2025 with authoritative all-fields slug -- easily plus raw power..."
Minick is listed as an infielder still on the UConn website, but Overslot's October 2025 evaluation thought he would see time in the outfield this season. If that's the case, his speed will show even more and give him more versatility heading into the draft. Something to watch for.
--UConn hockey alum, and current Buffalo Sabres star Tage Thompson scored a goal at the Olympics on Thursday afternoon. His power play goal helped lead Team USA to a 5-1 win over Latvia in the pool play opener.
--Syracuse University is looking for a new athletic director. Might they express interest in UConn AD David Benedict? One Syracuse insider speculates that it's possible. Current SU AD John Wildhack is retiring at the end of June and there is a search firm working to find his replacement.
--UConn football stars Skyler Bell and Joe Fagnano both received invitations to the NFL combine later this month.
