Cayden Suchy was the Big East Pitcher of the Year, and now he's in Tallahassee.
Now-former UConn Huskies standout pitcher Cayden Suchy is gaining real buzz after his decision to transfer to Florida State this spring.
Suchy, a left-hander, was highlighted by D1Baseball on social media earlier this week. The Seminoles boast one of the top programs in the country and should give Suchy an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament, and perhaps in the College World Series in Omaha.
Florida State hosted its own regional in 2026, but was upended and missed a chance to play in Omaha. FSU went 40-19 in total. Prominent Seminoles baseball alums include Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash and young Cleveland Guardians ace Parker Messick.
About UConn baseball in 2026
As for the Huskies, they went went 32-26 last season, also going 15-6 in Big East play. They lost both games of the Big East tournament, ending their season on May 21.
On the alumni front, it was a good year for former Huskies, as Anthony Kay was a big part of the Chicago White Sox team that got to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. George Springer, perhaps the most decorated UConn alum, finished out his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays and is weighing his options moving forward. He was given a great sendoff in Toronto in case he's played his last game there.
The Cayden Suchy file
A Virginia native, Suchy was named the Big East Pitcher of the Year in 2026 after going 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA. He struck out 105 batters in 89.1 innings, giving him a strikeout rate of 29 percent.
He was even better inside league play, going 5-0 with a 1.81 ERA against Big East opponents.
He's getting ready for his junior season, which means he has a chance to get drafted in 2027. Of course, because of pending labor issues between major league owners and the MLBPA, no one knows exactly what the draft is going to look like moving forward.
Elsewhere for UConn athletics...
1) The UConn football team is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Air Force. Our own Jami Leabow previewed the contest, which will center on the Huskies ability to stop the run.
2) The UConn men and women's basketball teams both open up their seasons on Monday. The women take on Cornell while the men play Gardner-Webb.
