Donnie Freeman announced he was leaving Syracuse when the transfer portal opened.

Earlier this week, it was reported that now-former Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman would be visiting the University of Connecticut on Friday.

Now, per new reports, Freeman has canceled his visit.

From On3:

Syracuse transfer forward Donnie Freeman cancelled his visit planned for Friday, April 17, sources confirmed to the UConn Report. Both Kentucky and Alabama are in the running for Freeman as UConn has bowed out of the bidding. Kentucky appears to be the overwhelming favorite.

Freeman was visiting Kentucky on Wednesday and evidently the visit went well. He announced his intention to leave Syracuse when the transfer portal opened last week.

About Freeman

At 6'9, Freeman is now a rising junior. He's a very talented player, but that talent never translated to wins for the Orange, who went 15-17 this past season. They've been under .500 in both of Freeman's years, though he's only played 37 total games because of injuries.

In his two seasons in Central New York, he averaged 15.3 ppg and 7.5 rebounds, all while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor. He averaged 16.5 ppg in 2025-26.

On the positives, he represents everything about modern-day offense. With his height, he has the ability to play in the paint if he needs to, but he also is capable of shooting the three-pointer (30.2 percent this year), or taking a defender off the dribble.

On the negative side of things, he played a lot of isolation ball with the Orange. Is that because he's a ball dominant player that doesn't play as well inside of a system, or is that because Syracuse's offense didn't really have a system other than "let Donnie make plays?" That's for his next school to figure out. It just appears that next school won't be UConn.

My first read

My first thought is that UConn doesn't need Freeman. Not because he's not good, but because Dan Hurley's systems are well-established and you have to be the right kind of player to fit into the Huskies culture. Tarris Reed Jr. and Silas Demary Jr. were clear home runs for the Huskies in the portal, but it's unclear if Freeman would be.

Take this recent clip from Syracuse alum Eric Devendorf, who expressed some disappointing sentiments about Freeman's lack of consistent effort defensively. The exact wording was "lackadaisical sometimes in the rotation, just energy and effort."

Those are things that wouldn't fly with Hurley.

We took a look at the state of the current UConn roster earlier on Friday. You can keep track of everything here.
