Defensive line coach LaTroy Lewis apparently is leaving head coach Jason Candle’s first staff at UConn, even before the spring game.
Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported late Monday that Lewis is expected to be hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their assistant defensive line coach.
Lewis, 32, was one of 15 assistant coaches announced by UConn on Jan. 2. At least 10 of them have ties to Toledo, where Candle spent 10 seasons as head coach before accepting the UConn job in early December.
Candle replaces Jim Mora, who left UConn after back-to-back nine-win seasons to become the head coach at Colorado State.
In his college days, Lewis was a defensive lineman at Tennessee. As a senior in 2016, he had a career-high in tackles (36), tackles for loss (4.0) and sacks (2.5).
He was a part of three consecutive Volunteers teams that played in a bowl game – and won. He graduated from Tennessee in 2017.
Undrafted, Lewis was off and on NFL practice squads for two seasons. He played in two games for the Houston Texans in 2017, making three tackles and recording one sack.
Lewis entered the coaching field in 2020, serving as a graduate assistant for Akron, his hometown team. He went on to work as a grad assistant at South Alabama, as a special teams assistant at Wake Forest, a grad assistant and then assistant defensive line coach at Michigan. He was part of the team that won the national championship in the 2023 season.
He joined Candle’s staff at Toledo as defensive line coach before the 2025 season.
