Nearly the entire game on Saturdsay was flawless for Jason Candle's bunch, but there is one area that the Huskies will want to correct. And it's been a continuous issue.
The UConn Huskies football team moved to 2-1 with a 48-20 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday night. It was a game that Jason Candle's team controlled throughout, and we covered all that went well here.
We also took a slightly deeper look at the emergence of running back Cyncir Bowers and why we think his development is a welcome sign for the offense in general.
However, there is one area that Candle will want to fix as the team gets ready for a battle with Miami (OH) next Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET): Penalties.
The Huskies committed eight penalties in total, numbering 74 yards. As the games get closer and the opponents get tougher, those penalty yards will matter more and more. UConn won't have the ability to "out-talent" everyone on its schedule, and will have to be able to win on the margins. Penalties are part of the margins.
The Huskies also committed eight penalties for 72 yards against Maryland, a game they lost 38-14 on Sept. 12. Even though they beat Lafayette 56-7 in the Sept. 5 opener, they committed a whopping 11 penalties for 134 yards.
Those kinds of numbers are not sustainable moving forward, and it's something that Candle will want to address ASAP.
Up next for the Huskies
UConn will be back in action on Saturday against the Redhawks in a second consecutive road game. Miami is 1-2 after losing to in-state rival Cincinnati last week. It was a brutal loss, as Miami led the game by 21 points before ultimately losing 35-31.
Miami was destroyed 59-14 earlier in the season by Pitt.
