The former Huskies signal-caller played for the Baltimore Ravens in a Sunday loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Buffalo Bills rolled over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon in Orchard Park, N.Y. to improve to 5-1 on the season.
With the loss, Baltimore fell to 4-3. However, the big news for UConn Huskies football fans is that Huskies alum Joe Fagnano saw his first NFL action, playing extensive snaps in relief of injured quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley.
Jackson returned to start this game from an ankle injury that had sidelined him for multiple weeks. That forced Huntley to the backup role and Fagnano to the emergency QB role.
Well, both quarterbacks got hurt, and that forced Fagnano into the game. Once the emergency quarterback is brought in, the original top quarterbacks can't return.
Fagnano struggled overall, going 10-of-21 for just 91 yards and an interception. He took three sacks and lost a fumble. He did have a touchdown pass called back because of a penalty. He looked in control early, but as the game got more lopsided, the Bills were able to make him more uncomfortable.
He also got injured and was tended to on the sideline for a foot injury, but he was able to stay in the game.
He may have to start on Thursday as the Ravens are back in action on a short week. According to Tom Pelissero, Jackson could be out for the season.
About Fagnano
Fagnano spent seven seasons in college (2019-25), taking full advantage of previously-allowed redshirt years and COVID exemptions. He played four years at the University of Maine and then spent three years at UConn, serving as the starter in 2024 and 2025. Last season, he completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,448 yards. He had 28 touchdowns against just one interception and a passer rating of 161.0.
UConn went 9-3 in the 2025 regular season and earned a spot in the Fenway Bowl, which it lost to Army. He did not play and the Huskies finished 9-4.
Fagnano paired with All-American wide receiver Skyler Bell and dynamic running back Cam Edwards to create a three-headed monster on offense. Fagnano was undrafted in the NFL Draft but signed with the Ravens shortly following the draft.
He was excellent in the preseason, leading the NFL in passing yards and completions. He did enough to earn a spot and is a valuable part of the Ravens roster, Sunday's results notwithstanding.
Bell doesn't suit up
This was almost a great day for UConn fans, as Bell is a member of the Bills, but he was made inactive. Bell, a fourth-round pick of the Bills, has struggled to find time. He's played in two games but has no catches.
Stewart in the crowd
UConn women's basketball alum Breanna Stewart, who four national titles with the Huskies, was in attendance as a fan. She's a Syracuse, N.Y. native and was shown on the jumbotron.
