The UConn men’s basketball team made history Sunday when three players were named first-team All-Big East selections – a first in the league record books.
Seniors Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. were joined by junior guard Silas Demary Jr. on the first team. But the honors didn’t stop there for the Huskies.
All five starters were recognized, with Solo Ball named to the second team. Braylon Mullins was selected unanimously to the All-Freshman team.
Demary, in his first season at UConn following his transfer from Georgia, also was named to the All-Defensive Team.
The five players were the most honored with all-league awards since six players from the 2005-06 team were All-Big East selections. (For the curious, they were Rudy Gay, first team; Hilton Armstrong and Marcus Williams, second team; Rashad Anderson and Josh Boone, honorable mention; and Jeff Adrien, all-rookie.)
UConn (27-4, 17-3 Big East) is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big East tournament.
For Karaban, this is his third Big East award in four seasons and first selection to the first team. And it comes in a season in which he started all 20 conference games and averaged 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. His 33.8 minutes per game ranked in the top five in the conference, and the Huskies were 62-18 (.775) in his regular-season games – the best career record of any Big East player.
The Sixth Man of the Year last season, Reed was chosen for the first team in his second campaign in the league after transferring from Michigan. In his 20 conference games, he averaged 13.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 blocks – the latter best in the league. His shooting percentage of 63.5 also topped the Big East.
Demary earned a selection to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team in 2023-24 and made the first team in his debut season in the Big East. His 7.4 assists per game were best in league contests, when he also made 45.8% of his field goals and shot 47.3% from 3-point territory. The unofficial captain of one of the nation’s best defenses, he averaged 1.6 steals per game.
This is Ball’s second consecutive second-team selection. In league action, he posted 13.6 points and 3.4 rebounds and was among league leaders with 2.2 3-pointers made per game.
Mullins started 19 of 20 league games and averaged 12.8 points and 3.5 rebounds, adding 24 steals and 15 blocked shots. In the Big East season, he shot 37.6% from long distance and made 50 shots. He is the sixth consecutive conference All-Freshman selection for the Huskies.
