Michigan overtook the Huskies at No. 2 after impressive conference wins.
A pair of wins over top 10 teams sent Michigan to No. 2 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, released Monday. The Wolverines overtook UConn.
The Huskies (21-1, 11-0 Big East) fell a spot to No. 3 after wins over Big East rivals Providence and Creighton last week. The Wolverines (20-1) topped their Big Ten competitors, then-No. 5 Nebraska and then-No. 7 Michigan State – better resume-building wins in the eyes of voters, undoubtedly.
Arizona (22-0) remains No. 1.
This week, UConn will host Xavier (12-10, 4-7) and play No. 23 St. John’s (16-5, 9-1) at Madison Square Garden. It will be the first of two games against the Red Storm down the stretch; UConn also is scheduled to host them on Feb. 28.
UConn’s one loss on the season came Nov. 19, 71-67, to No. 1 Arizona. Since then, the Huskies are 17-0.
Women stay No. 1
The defending national champion UConn women (23-0, 12-0) maintained their spot at No. 1 on Monday. They’ve held that place since the preseason poll and captured all 31 first-place votes. UCLA (21-1) held on to the No. 2 spot for the second consecutive week.
The Huskies defeated then-No. 15 at home on Sunday, 96-66. The decisive victory came nearly one calendar year after the Lady Vols beat the Huskies on their home court in Knoxville.
UConn has not lost since.
The Huskies have eight Big East games remaining. This week, they will visit DePaul on Wednesday and host Butler on Saturday.
