Dan Hurley has agreed to a two-year contract extension to remain as the men’s basketball coach of the UConn Huskies through the 2031-32 season, the school confirmed Friday.

Hurley signed a six-year contract in 2024 that had four years remaining on it. UConn added two more years "under the existing terms," the school announced.

At that time, UConn reported the six-year contract was valued at $50 million.

Jon Rothstein of 247Sports, who first reported the news on Friday, said Hurley will remain one of college basketball’s highest-paid coaches.

USA Today has not released its annual salary database for college basketball coaches for the 2026-27 season yet. But in its April update, the publication reported that only Bill Self of Kansas ($8.85 million) had a higher annual salary than Hurley’s $8.03 million.

They were followed by John Calipari of Arkansas ($7.75 million), Tom Izzo of Michigan State ($7.2 million) and Rick Barnes of Tennessee ($6.2 million).

At 53, Hurley is 10 years younger than Self. Izzo and Barnes are in their early 70s. His earning potential over the remainder of his career is sky-high.

UConn plucked the fiery Hurley from the sidelines at Rhode Island to take the Huskies in a different direction following their split from Kevin Ollie. While Ollie led UConn to a national title in the 2013-14 season, the perennial power Huskies made just two NCAA Tournaments in his six seasons on the job.

Ollie succeeded his former coach, Jim Calhoun, who guided his teams to three NCAA Tournament championships. Under his leadership from 2012-18, the Huskies were 127-79 (.617).

Hurley’s success, in terms of winning percentage, has outdone Calhoun, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Calhoun’s record at UConn was 629-245 – a .720 winning percentage – from 1986-2012. Hurley is ahead in that category at .726. His record is 199-75.

The Huskies finished 16-17 in Hurley’s first season, 2018-19. The following season, they were 19-12 and likely to make the NCAA Tournament but is was canceled due to the pandemic.

Since then, UConn has not missed a tournament, won championships in 2023 and ’24, and was the runner-up this year, losing 69-63 to Michigan.

Big expectations

Much now is expected from Hurley’s teams, given the Huskies’ success during his era.

They open the 2026-27 season Monday night at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn. (9 p.m. ET, Peacock, NBCSN) against Gardner-Webb.

Despite the loss of program icon Alex Karaban and center Tarris Reed Jr. to the 2026 NBA Draft, the Huskies enter the game ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason poll, trailing Florida, Duke and Illinois.
