The Huskies will host Purdue Tuesday night in the final exhibition game for both teams.
Dan Hurley will have the final opportunity before the season opener to get a look at the preseason No. 4 UConn Huskies on Tuesday night when they host Purdue, renewing old acquaintances at the same time.
PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Conn., is 2,500 miles away from the neutral court where the Huskies and Boilermakers last met. But the game is about a million miles away in terms of importance.
The Tuesday game is just an exhibition; the other contest was the championship game of the NCAA Tournament on April 8, 2024, at State Farm Arena in Glendale, Ariz.
The Huskies won the game, 75-60, for their sixth NCAA title.
Both teams are 2-0 in the preseason, with the Tuesday game the final for each.

Purdue coach Matt Painter
Purdue and UConn have met six times, with the Boilermakers holding a 4-2 series lead. Still, Purdue hasn’t defeated the Huskies in nearly 30 years. That came Nov. 28, 1992, when Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson scored 30 points.
His teammate, guard Matt Painter – now the longtime head coach – contributed six points and five assists in the 73-69 win.
Painter’s record at Purdue is 501-224, amassed after 21 seasons since his hiring in 2005. Five times, he has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year. He is 0-2 against UConn.
His coach at Purdue was the legendary Gene Keady, and Painter succeeded him on the sideline. The latter’s career record with the Boilermakers is 501-224, putting him 12 wins away from breaking Keady’s school-record 512 wins.

USA TODAY NetworkWhen Painter hit the 500-wins mark last season, Purdue became just the second program to have two head coaches with 500 wins at the school. The other? Kansas, with Phog Allen and Bill Self.
Purdue announced Tuesday that it had agreed with Painter on a contract extension that will keep him on campus in West Lafayette, Ind., through the 2030-31 season.
Purdue’s outlook
The Boilermakers were not ranked in the preseason top 25 poll, which is rare for Purdue. They were No. 1 entering the 2025-26 season. The program’s streak of 79 consecutive weeks in the Top 25 – which Purdue’s athletic department said was the second-longest in the country and longest in school history – was snapped.
Since March 1, 2021, Purdue has been ranked in the AP Top 25 on 101 occasions out of 104 polls, according to the school.
Changing of the guards
Purdue, like UConn, has an altered starting lineup.
The Huskies return to the court without school legend Alex Karaban and center Tarris Reed Jr., both off to the NBA.

Jeff Curry-Imagn ImagesThree household names have departed from Purdue: Braden Smith – the NCAA all-time assists leader – along with forward Trey Kaufman-Renn and guard Fletcher Loyer. The three seniors combined to score 42.6 points per game – almost exactly divided at 14.3, 14.2 and 14.1 points, respectively.
Also gone is center Oscar Cluff, who started all 39 games for the Boilermakers (30-9) last season. Cluff averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds last season.
With his four senior teammates having left the program, guard C.J. Cox becomes the on-court leader. He contributed 8.5 points and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 37.3% from 3-point range and 84.2% from the foul line last season.
He is expected to be joined by forward Caden Pierce, a Princeton transfer, and three program returnees: 7-foot-4 center Daniel Jacobsen and guards Omer Mayer and Gicarri Harris.
Jacobsen and Mayer each averaged 5.5 points per game with Harris adding 4.6 last season.
