With five players drafted in the first round, UCLA surpassed the Huskies' record of four, set in 2002.
Move over, Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Tamika Williams. And make way for the UCLA women’s basketball 2026 draft class.
Five members of the newly crowned national champion Bruins were selected Monday in the first round of WNBA draft, breaking the record of four first-rounders from one school in the same year. The previous record holder was the 2002 UConn squad, which featured Bird -- the Associated Press Player of the Year that season -- and the others. They defeated Oklahoma 82-70 to win the NCAA title and to cap an undefeated (39-0) season.
Bird was taken No. 1 overall by the Seattle Storm in 2002 and remained with the franchise until her 2022 retirement. Cash went second in the draft to the Detroit Shock and played with five WNBA teams in her 14 seasons.

The bulk of Jones’ career – nine seasons – was spent with the Connecticut Sun, but she also spent two seasons with Washington and one with Minnesota. Williams remained with the Lynx for six seasons, followed by one with the Sun.
Two UConn players were selected Monday night. Guard Azzi Fudd was tabbed by the Dallas Wings with the No. 1 overall pick. The Sun took center Serah Williams with the No. 33 overall pick, then sent her to the expansion Portland Fire in a draft-night trade.

The UCLA six
UCLA broke a second record – most players selected in a one draft – when the Sun selected Charlisse Leger-Walker in the second round, No. 18 overall. With her selection, the Bruins surpassed record holder Tennessee (1997, 2008), Notre Dame (2019) and South Carolina (2023), each having five players drafted in the same year.
The Bruins drafted in the first round were:
4. Washington Mystics, Lauren Betts
5. Chicago Sky (via Sun), Gabriela Jaquez
6. Toronto Tempo, Kiki Rice
9. Washington Mystics (via Storm), Angela Dugalic
15. Connecticut Sun (via Lynx), Gianna Kneepkens
“I’m so excited to be here, I think having these dreams of going to UCLA and going to the WNBA and to achieve them not only by myself, but with my teammates means everything,” Jaquez told ESPN after her name was called.
And she’s eager to be part of her next team, the Sky.
“Going into every game and doing what the team needs,” she said about how she will approach her new job in Chicago. “I’m going into training camp ready to learn, being a sponge and being myself and working hard.”
