Cam Edwards could be on his way out of Storrs and is visiting Michigan State.

University of Connecticut running back Cam Edwards has set a transfer portal visit with Michigan State, according to a recent report from On3.

NEW: Transfer portal RB Cam Edwards schedules Michigan State official visit…

Edwards ran for 2,690 yards on 480 carries, scoring 27 rushing TDs on three full seasons with UConn. He also caught 47 passes for 467 yards and four touchdowns.

It should be noted that just because a player enters the transfer portal, it doesn't mean they are officially leaving. There is still a chance that Edwards could return to the Huskies, even if it's remote.

More on Edwards

A Connecticut native, Edwards played at nearby Norwalk High School. He became the first Huskies running back since 2019 to reach the 1,000-yard plateau, pairing with Joe Fagnano and receiver Skyler Bell to make up a dynamic offense. Bell was named an AP First Team All-American. The Huskies went 9-4 and lost in the Fenway Bowl to Army (41-16).

Why would he want to transfer?

In this day and age, players transfer for any number of reasons, so trying to speculate is really a futile exercise.

Perhaps Edwards sees a better NFL future at a bigger program. Perhaps he sees a bigger NIL payday. Perhaps he wants a chance to play in the College Football Playoff. Perhaps it's all three.

Perhaps he only liked playing for head coach Jim Mora, who has now left. Perhaps he thinks UConn will be worse without Bell and Fangano, who are graduating. It could be any or all of those things.

What is interesting is that Michigan State went 4-8 this season, 5-7 in 2024, 4-8 in 2023 and 5-7 in 2022. The Spartans are a bigger program in a bigger conference, but they aren't necessarily a great program right now.

How can new head coach Jason Candle convince Edwards to stay?

This is just my opinion, but I don't necessarily think he should. Edwards has given three years to his state school; if he wants to leave, he deserves the right to do so.

That said, Candle can sell him on continuing to elevate the program, becoming a true program legend and icon, as well as a role model for future Huskies.

Those things don't come with the cache of NIL or the Big Ten, but they count for something. Also, he'd be guaranteed to be the featured back in Storrs, which can only help his film for a potential NFL career.
