The UConn women’s basketball team will have a short turnaround before its conference game against Seton Hall.
The No. 1 Huskies (19-0, 9-0 Big East) will play at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night, then again at noon on Saturday at the Pirates. The game had been scheduled for noon on Sunday, but it was rescheduled with a massive winter storm predicted to pummel the Northeast that day.
The game will be played at Walsh Gymnasium on the Seton Hall campus in South Orange, N.J. Peacock will have coverage of the game with a simulcast on NBCSN.
The Pirates (14-5, 8-2 Big East) do not play until Saturday, meaning they'll have rest before the Huskies. They were 73-57 winners at home against Providence on Tuesday, using a 14-2 run and a 30-point third quarter to shake the Friars.
Savannah Catalon led Seton Hall with 19 points. Mariana Valenzuela scored 15 points and added a team-high eight rebounds, and Zahara Bishop put in 12 points to go with six rebounds and three steals.
The Pirates also have a local connection to UConn.
Shailyn Pinkney, who had a career-high nine assists against Providence, led East Hartford High School to a state championship in her senior season. She earned 2020-21 Connecticut Girls Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year honors. She has appeared in 85 games (43 starts) in her Seton Hall career and is averaging 4.1 points this season.
Catalon leads Seton Hall with 14.3 points and 3.1 steals. Valenzuela averages 13.0 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds.
The anticipated winter storm also forced the Hockey East Association to adjust its schedule for a two-game series between the No. 5 UConn and No. 8 Northeastern women’s hockey teams.
The conference clash initially was intended as a home-and-home series, with games scheduled to be played Saturday in Storrs, Conn., and Sunday in Waltham, Mass. Now, both games will be played at Toscano Family Ice Forum on the UConn campus.
Games are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. in Storrs. Both games will stream live on ESPN+.
UConn is 18-4-2 on the season. Northeastern is 18-6-0.
Moving both the basketball and hockey games is a very wise move. Safety is paramount, and with forecasters expecting temperatures in the single digits – or lower – and a double-digit-inch snowfall beginning Sunday in the Northeast, student-athletes and fans are best off at home.
