The No. 1 UConn women’s basketball team will honor its five seniors in what is sure to be an emotional ceremony Sunday following its noon game against Providence at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
Ice Brady, Caroline Ducharme, Azzi Fudd, Ayanna Patterson and Serah Williams will take center stage for the ceremony, which will be streamed on the UConn women's basketball X and Facebook pages, the UConn Huskies YouTube page and UConn+.
Ducharme and Fudd are fifth-year seniors who made their first appearances in the 2021-22 season. With them on the roster, the Huskies are 159-21 overall – including 28-0 (17-0 Big East) this season – and appeared in two NCAA championship games, three Final Fours and five Big East conference championship games.
All but Williams were on the roster for the 2025 national champion Huskies. She transferred from Wisconsin for her final season.
Brady and Patterson are seniors but have an extra year of eligibility because of redshirt seasons if they decide to extend their careers. They are going through Senior Day festivities, however.
Ducharme was a key contributor as a freshman when she was named to the Big East all-freshman team and was second-team all-conference. But a series of head and neck injuries derailed her career.
Fudd took the torch from Paige Bueckers to lead the Huskies this season and will pass it to Sarah Strong when she graduates and heads to the WNBA draft, where she will be a high selection.
Entering the game against Providence, Fudd is averaging 18.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals over a team-leading 28.8 minutes per game. She has played in all 28 games and is shooting 49.7% (191 of 384) from the field, 46.9% (85 of 181) from 3-point territory and 95.0% (38 of 40) from the foul line.
Fudd is third in the nation in 3-point percentage.
She had the option of leaving school after the Huskies won their national title but decided to come back. She said Saturday it was the right decision.
“One hundred percent worth it,” she said. “And I definitely made the right decision, and this year has been honestly the most fun. … Just like, from every perspective, point of view, points in area of my life. I've grown a lot. I've had so much fun and I would do it again.”
Williams came to UConn after back-to-back seasons as an All-Big Ten honoree. She said she’s glad she’s had the experience of being with the Huskies.
“I took myself out of my comfort zone, and I think I had to do that just to give myself a chance and see what I could learn from it,” Williams said.
At times the transition was taxing, she said.
“I’ve definitely had to tap into my mental health side of things. When the pressure is so high, your kind of like, ‘I didn't really expect it to affect me as much.’ But I really learned how to train myself to be able to push the mental aside, or work through the mental, not suppress it. … I'm in this environment for a reason.”
