On Sunday afternoon in Berlin, Germany, the Team USA women's basketball team won its 12th World Cup gold medal by defeating France in the gold medal game of the FIBA Women's World Cup.

The Americans haven't lost a World Cup game since 2006 and they've won every Olympic gold medal since 1996. The group remains one of the most dominant teams in international sports history and they will be the favorites at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

However, the rest of the world is coming: The Americans, playing with a group of WNBA stars, only beat Italy by three in the Group Stage round, and they only beat Spain by 10 in the semifinals. France had a 14-point lead before the Americans stormed back to take control of the second half on Sunday.

Three UConn Huskies women's basketball alums won gold with Team USA: Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Paige Bueckers. It was Buecker's first time representing the Senior National Team. Stewart won tournament MVP honors. It's her fourth World Cup gold medal and her second MVP (2018).

As a result of winning the MVP, she was named to the tournament's "All-Star Five." Joining her on that list? Another former Huskies alum in Gabby Williams, who played for France. Williams was third in the tournament in scoring at 18.7 ppg. She was also named the Best Defensive Player of the Tournament.

Stewart is the first two-time MVP in World Cup history. She averaged 12.2 ppg and 7.3 rebounds without regularly needing to play mass minutes because of blowouts in multiple Team USA wins.

The next World Cup is in Tokyo in 2030.

Now 32 years old, Stewart is also one of the best players in Huskies history. A four-year standout, Stewart was a national champion in all four seasons. She was also a three-time All-American, a three-time AP Player of the Year, a three-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and a three-time All-Region selection. She was the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons and averaged 17.6 ppg for her career. She played for the Huskies during both the Big East and AAC years.

She became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and currently plays for the New York Liberty. She is an eight-time All-Star and a two-time MVP.

Williams, a four-year standout for the Huskies, crossed over with Stewart for two of those national titles (2015-16). She started 85 games in Storrs, being named Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. She was also a two-time Associated Press All-American and a two-time All-AAC selection. She averaged 10.6 ppg for her career and was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft (Chicago Sky).
