Four members of the Golden State Valkyries won a WNBA title on Saturday night, and they created some history as well.
On Saturday night, the Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream to win the first WNBA title in Golden State history.
With that title, four distinguished members of the UConn Huskies alumni family also won championships: Gabby Williams, Tiffany Hayes, Kiah Stokes and Kaitlyn Chen.
Williams was named the MVP of the Finals after scoring 30 points in the clincher. Twenty-eight of those points came in the second half.
Several members of the Huskies' alumni quartet created some unique history as a result of these Finals, so let's take a deeper look.
Gabby Williams and the MVP connection
1) As noted by ESPN, Williams' 28-points in the second half are the most ever in a single half of any WNBA postseason game (30 seasons).
In addition to her 30 points, she also had four blocks and hit four 3-pointers.
2) As noted by Stat Muse, UConn now has four different players who have won WNBA Finals MVP, and it's happened six times in total.
Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart have done it twice, while Maya Moore and Williams have done it once.
Stokes and the title connection
Golden State Valkyries center Kiah Stokes (41) after winning the 2026 WNBA Finals against the Atlanta Dream at Chase Center. Kelley L Cox-Imagn ImagesStokes now has four WNBA championships over her 12-year career. She won rings with the Las Vegas Aces in 2022, 2023 and 2025, and now with Golden State.
Her four WNBA titles tie her with Sue Bird and Maya Moore for the most titles among UConn alums. Bird played with the
Furthermore, Stokes won three more championships during her time in Storrs, giving her seven titles in all between college and the WNBA. That ties her with Stewart for the most combined titles among UConn alums.
Stewart famously won the national championship in all four seasons with the Huskies and then has three more in the WNBA.
And how about the current Huskies?
The current group of UConn players will do their best to win their own championship in 2026-27, and that quest begins on Monday night when UConn hosts Cornell (5 p.m. ET) at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford.
The Huskies are coming off a season in which they went 38-1, only losing in the Final Four to South Carolina. UConn last won the title in 2024-25, which was the final year of Paige Bueckers's career. She and Azzi Fudd both play for the Dallas Wings now, so maybe they will be the next pair of former Huskies to win a WNBA championship.
