Sydney Savoury is the next player to join the Huskies for next season.

While the No. 2-ranked UConn Huskies women's basketball team suffered a big loss on Thursday night against No. 5 Michigan, the program earned a big win on Friday by getting a commitment from top recruit Sydney Savoury.

According to ESPN, Savoury is the No. 9 ranked player in the Class of 2027.

Savoury, 6-foot, is from Canton, Mich. In September, she narrowed her list down to six schools: Southern California, North Carolina, Texas, Notre Dame, UConn and UCLA.

She visited UConn on Oct. 23 and committed just two weeks later. She is the first official commitment for the Huskies from this class.

Savoury has represented Team USA on the international circuit, helping lead the Americans to the gold medal at the 2026 FIBA U18 Women's AmeriCup. She averaged 5.8 ppg and 3.2 rebounds in five games. She was named to the U18 national team in June.

In the 2024-25 high school season, she averaged 27.7 ppg and 7.1 rebounds. She was the Gatorade Michigan Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Her mother played basketball at BYU.

About the outlook for the 2027-28 Huskies

Because of the NCAA's new "Five-in-Five" rule, eligibility for players is certainly different than it was previously, so trying to figure out exactly how the roster will shape up is a little futile at this moment. UConn is expected to bring back Sarah Strong, who will be a senior, as well as Blanca Quinonez, who will be a junior.

Furthermore, Olivia Vukosa will just be a sophomore, so there will be competition for Savoury to find early minutes in her career. However, there's always a chance that Strong could leave early for the WNBA, so you just never know what's in store.

As for the current Huskies...

While Thursday's loss was disappointing, there's no time for the Huskies to sit back and wallow in the defeat. They'll have to rectify things quick, because they'll have another Top 10 matchup on Sunday when they host No. 10 Iowa at Gampel Pavilion.

Iowa has become one of the top programs nationally.

Former UConn standout Azzi Fudd, who helped the program win the 2024-25 national title, will be in attendance as she will take her place in the "Huskies of Honor" before the game.

Fudd was taken No. 1 in the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings. Her season was cut short by knee surgery.
