Suchy, the Big East Pitcher of the Year, entered the transfer portal. Reports indicate multiple Southeastern Conference teams are interested in signing him.

Cayden Suchy came to UConn two years ago, turned in a masterful season in 2026 and now most likely is off to warmer pastures.

Suchy has entered the baseball transfer portal, which opened June 1, and he undoubtedly has been bombarded by text messages and calls from schools down south and possibly out west.

Based on his sophomore season performance, the left-hander could wind up playing for a power-conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament next spring.

The Cayden Suchy file

Suchy, 20, is from Virginia, where he played at Dominion High School in Sterling. A two-way player, he twice was named All-State as an outfielder. As a senior, he was an All-State pitcher and the Virginia Player of the Year.

He threw two no-hitters in April of his senior season but was being scouted early in his high school career.

He also committed to UConn and head coach Jim Penders early in his high school career – as a sophomore, announcing his decision on Sept. 12, 2022.

As a freshman at UConn, he appeared in nine games (four starts) before an elbow injury ended his season on the mound. He had an up-and-down season but threw some gems. That included a seven-inning, nine-strikeout 5-2 win over UNC Greensboro on March 22 in which he gave up two hits and one unearned run.

Sophomore-season success

Suchy came back strong in 2026, though – despite the team losing the first three games he pitched.

He started for UConn on Feb. 14 against Kansas State – an offensive dynamo – and drew praise from the national media for his performance. In six innings, he allowed two runs on four hits and a walk and struck out nine batters in a 5-2 loss.

He followed up with outings against Arizona (5-4 loss) and UNC Wilmington (2-1 loss), and he threw a combined 13 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits. He struck out 17.

He didn’t figure in any of the decisions.

Suchy finished the season with a 5-3 record and an ERA of 2.82. In 89 1/3 innings, he struck out 105 batters – a 29% strikeout rate – and averaged 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He walked 23 in his 15 starts.

His regular-season conference stats propelled him to Big East Pitcher of the Year honors. Suchy tallied a 5-0 record and 1.81 ERA in Big East play to go with a 0.92 WHIP. He gave up 34 hits and struck out 54 batters over 44 2/3 innings.

What’s next for Cayden Suchy?

Baseball insiders expect Suchy to have opportunities to transfer to a high-major program for his junior season, despite likely being a one-and-done. He is eligible for the 2027 MLB Draft.

Media reports have linked him to a number of Southeastern Conference schools, including LSU, Vanderbilt and Florida, but the list of suitors for Suchy likely is much longer.

Left-handers always are in demand.

So, it would not be a surprise if Suchy is being contacted by teams in any of the power conferences. He could have a tough choice ahead of him and will need to consider which program best suits both his short-term and long-term goals. Where he fits into the plans of the team – would he be pegged as a weekend starter, for example – undoubtedly will be among his questions for interested coaches.
