Azzi Fudd scored just six points in a win over Xavier on Wednesday, but it was enough to move her past UConn legend Sue Bird on the Huskies’ all-time scoring list.
She now has 1,381 career points, tying her with Carla Berube (1993-97) for 38th place in UConn scoring history. Berube, now the head women’s coach at Princeton, preceded Bird (1998-2002).
This is not written to diminish Fudd’s achievement in any way, but instead, unbelievably, to wonder how a player of her caliber stands only tied for 38th. It's praise for Fudd that she has reached this mark in just 98 career games. Because of injuries, she has played a full season only once.
It’s also praise for all of the players who came before her, players recruited by head coach Geno Auriemma and his staff to carry on the UConn tradition. Players who helped UConn to win 12 national championships.
And Auriemma, in his 41st season, could well win No. 13 this season, his team led by a powerful duo of Fudd, a grad student, and sophomore Sarah Strong. Arguably the best 1-2 punch in women’s college basketball, they’ve combined to score 788 points this season and lead the Huskies to a 22-0 (12-0 Big East) record.
That’s an average of 35.8 points per game, which represents just a tick under 40 % of the team’s scoring average of 90.2.
After Strong (19.1 points per game) and Fudd (16.7), only freshman Blanca Quinonez (10.7) is averaging in double figures.
Just how high on the scoring list could Fudd end her UConn career? That depends on how far the Huskies go in the Big East conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
But, if she scored her average over the remaining nine games this season, she would add 150 points to her total for 1,531. That would leave her No. 30 on the all-time list, nestled between Moriah Jefferson (2012-16) with 1,532 points and Asjha Jones (1998-02) with 1.502.
Of course, she certainly has more than nine games left in a UConn uniform, provided she stays healthy.
And when the season ends, it will be remarkable to see where Strong, a sophomore, sits on the list. Earlier this season, she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in just 59 games, the third-fewest games in Huskies history to achieve the feat.
Through 62 career games, she has 1,078 points, putting her 50th on the UConn all-time list.
