Utah continues to make a strong impression on one of the state's rising defensive line prospects in the 2028 class.

Three-star defensive lineman Malakai Leilua, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound prospect out of Westlake High School, has seen his recruitment take off. The in-state standout has picked up interest from college programs, including Utah, and is grateful for the opportunities coming his way.

“It’s been a blessing. I’m really grateful for the opportunities and relationships I’ve built. I’m just staying focused, working, and letting God guide the process,” Leilua told me.

Utah has been building a relationship with Leilua, and receiving an offer from the Utes was a moment that stood out.

“It was a really special moment. Utah had been showing me a lot of love, so getting that offer meant a lot. I was excited and grateful that they believed in me.”

A big part of Utah's recruitment has been the relationships Leilua has developed with the defensive coaching staff, particularly Levani Damuni and Mikey Jacobson.

“I’ve built strong relationships with the defensive coaches like Coach Levani Damuni and Coach Mikey Jacobson,” Leilua said. “Our conversations are real, consistent, and go beyond just football, which I really appreciate.”

The Utah staff has made it clear what they like about Leilua's game, pointing to his motor, physicality, and versatility along the defensive front.

Leilua believes his playing style fits well with what Utah wants defensively.

“They play fast, physical, and disciplined. That fits my style, and I really like how they develop their D-line.”

The Westlake standout has also made significant strides in his development over the past year, particularly with his technique and understanding of the game.

“My consistency and understanding of the game. I’ve gotten better with my technique, hands, and pad level, and I’m playing faster and more confident.”

As his recruitment continues to grow, Leilua is looking for more than just an opportunity to play college football. Player development, academics, culture, and preparation for life after football will all factor into his eventual decision.

“I want to be somewhere that feels like family,” he said.

For Utah, the relationships already established with Leilua could play an important role moving forward. The Utes' emphasis on keeping local talent home is another part of their recruitment that has caught his attention.

“Utah is definitely a school I’m very serious about. I have strong relationships there, and I really like what they’re building,” Leilua said.

With plenty of time remaining in his recruitment, Utah has positioned itself as a serious contender for the talented in-state defensive lineman.
