As Morgan Scalley’s unbeaten Utes climb the rankings, analysts predict a high-stakes postseason clash against BYU that could bring the Beehive State’s fiercest rivalry to the national stage.
Going into the final month of action in the college football season, the Utah Utes have hit new heights in the Playoff era. Most outlets view Morgan Scalley's team as a College Football Playoff contender.
The No. 6 Utes are the lone unbeaten team remaining in the Big 12. After beating then-No. 14 Houston 21-13 last Saturday, they improved to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in league play. Scalley is the first Utah coach to start his tenure with an 8-0 record dating back to last year's Las Vegas Bowl win over Nebraska.
It's not just Utah who is buzzing in the Beehive State. The No. 8 BYU Cougars are a one-loss team after falling 39-31 to UCF in double overtime last Saturday. They dropped to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 action. BYU has a signature win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame, which will come into play at the end of the season.
For now, there is one Holy War matchup between the Utes and Cougars scheduled for next week. But could there be a Playoff rematch? ESPN's Mark Schlabach is predicting chaos with the Big 12's biggest rivalry in the postseason.
Utah’s bowl projection from Schlaback: CFP first round, No. 8 seed hosting No. 9 seed BYU. He has Utah beating BYU and advancing to the CFP quarterfinals before losing to No. 1 seed Miami. The Holy War being in the Playoff would be great for the sport. Especially with the game being played on campus in Salt Lake City.
