Solatoa Moea’i returns to the starting lineup after a significant ankle injury sidelined the Utes’ star freshman for this weekend's pivotal Top 25 showdown against the Cougars.

Utah Utes starting offensive guard Kelvin Obot will be out against No. 14 Houston, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

This is a major blow of the Utes in the Top 25 clash with the Cougars. Obot injured his ankle early in Utah’s win at Colorado last Saturday. The former five-star freshman was helped off the field and was unable to place any weight on his leg.

Utah coach Morgan Scalley said after the game that Obot, "went out and he should be fine." He also said the athletic training staff was "still trying to figure out if it’s going to be a high ankle sprain or whatever that is.”

As we now know, Obot's ankle injury will require him to be on the sideline for Saturday's game with the Cougars.

With Obot out, Utah will turn to Solatoa Moea’i, who filled in for the freshman against Colorado. He allowed Devon Dampier to be sacked in the game. Moea'i started the first three games this year before Obot replaced him.

Obot, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound true freshman from Fruitland (Idaho), was a top 50 recruit in the 2026 class. He was also a top-five tackle in the nation and was a 2026 Polynesian Bowl All-Star. Obot was also named first-team All-Idaho as a junior in 2024 on both the offensive and defensive lines.

The freshman will miss his first game of the season after playing in all six before the ankle injury. Obot was named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List earlier this year.

Moea'i will be tasked with replacing the production established by Obot. The offensive tackle came to Utah as a next-level prospect and has grown under Utes offensive line coach Jordan Gross. On tape, Obot has shown tremendous potential to trend towards potentially playing on Sundays. He has been dominating in the trenches by displaying outstanding balance in his game. He's still a bit raw, but has pure energy and knows how to use his feet.

One of the biggest variables Obot has worked on is his overall power. Trying to anchor one end of the offensive line became natural to him. But the learning curve with a few details in the college game is what he's working to improve with Gross. Obot has the potential to be a multi-year starter with all-conference upside at Utah. If that happens, he could be the Utes' next top-round NFL prospect.

No. 10 Utah hosts No. 14 Houston on Saturday at 10:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
