Devon Dampier’s gritty performance against Houston propelled the undefeated Utes into the top ten, securing the nation’s longest winning streak and sole possession of first place in the Big 12.
Every college football team changed except No. 1 Miami in this week's AP Top 25 poll. One of the oddest weeks of the season, with several teams surging ahead or falling back. After BYU moved up to its highest ranking in 42 years, they're no longer one of the top teams in the nation.
The hangover after knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame was real. BYU struggled to find consistency in the game against UCF and suffered the first loss of the season to UCF down in Orlando 39-31 in double overtime. For the Knights, this was the first top-five win in program history.
As for the rest of the nation, No. 7 Indiana slid through Michigan for a 13-6 win. No. 7 Ole Miss took a 34-27 loss to No. 19 Texas. On the other hand, No. 10 Utah Utes pulled out a huge 21-13 win over No. 14 Houston on Saturday night.
The Utes came into Saturday night with a golden opportunity. A win would make them the last undefeated team in the Big 12 conference. They took care of business against the Cougars and moved up to No. 6 in the country. Two spots ahead of BYU, who moved down to No. 8
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns to keep the Utes trending in the right direction. He also completed 18 of 26 passes for 204 yards with two interceptions.
The game wasn't pretty in the slightest, but he kept everything moving. The biggest plays came on the ground due to the strength of Houston's secondary. The Cougars found ways to stop Utah's running game early until Dampier took matters into his own hands.
"I'm never scared to tote the rock," Dampier said. "If that's what I got to do to win the game for my team."
Utah (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) maintains the longest active winning streak in college football at 13 games.
Miami, Utah and UCLA are the only remaining unbeaten teams, the fewest at this point in a season since there were three left in 1977.
