As Salt Lake City prepares for the national spotlight, legendary Utes like Eric Weddle and Alex Smith emerge as top contenders to join the desk at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

For the seventh time in school history, ESPN's College GameDay is heading to Salt Lake City.

The No. 10 Utah Utes host the No. 14 Houston Cougars in one of two Top 25 college football matchups this weekend. The University of Utah will host the popular pregame show on Saturday, bringing national attention to the Utes after featuring BYU before the big win over Notre Dame last weekend in Provo.

While host Rece Davis and analysts Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit will break down the weekend's biggest games, everyone wants to know who will be this week's guest picker?

The names stand out as potential candidates for ESPN College GameDay, but one former Ute could be the clear favorite. Here's the trio with Utah ties in no particular order.

Eric Weddle

This one is truly a no-brainer. Few people represent Utah football better than Weddle. The former All-American safety starred for the Utes from 2003-06, helping lead the program through one of the most successful stretches in school history under Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham.

Weddle was part of Utah's undefeated 2004 team that went 12-0 in the BCS era. His senior year was extraordinary, recording seven interceptions, two interception-return touchdowns and a fumble-return score. He also contributed on offense, which added to his versatility that made him one of the program's all-time greats.

After a 14-year NFL career that included six Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl championship with the Los Angeles Rams, Weddle remains closely connected to Utah. He has become an outspoken supporter of head coach Morgan Scalley and frequently engages with Utes fans. His recent induction into Utah's Ring of Honor makes him a perfect choice. Although Weddle coaches at Rancho Bernardo High School, GameDay could potentially accommodate his schedule.

Alex Smith

The former Utah quarterback would also make sense. He has worked for ESPN prior, and even served as a guest picker in 2025 as well.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft led the Utes to a Fiesta Bowl victory and finished his college career with a 21-1 record as a starter. Since Smith served as Utah's guest picker last year, making a repeat appearance is now less likely.

Steve Smith Sr.

Another familiar face could be coming home to Salt Lake City. The former Carolina Panthers wide receiver is another possibility. A Utah standout before his NFL career, Smith appeared on GameDay ahead of the 2023 Oregon matchup.

Smith would bring a great personality and connection to the program. He would be a compelling choice for many reasons. But probably not the "Chosen one" this time around.

Weddle appears to be the strongest candidate, given his deep ties to Utah and his relationship with Scalley. We'll see what ESPN decides to do, but any of the three would be a great pick, no pun intended.

No. 10 Utah hosts No. 14 Houston on Saturday night at 10:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
