The Huskies survived a game Badgers team in a Big Ten showdown on the road

The No. 24 Washington Huskies women's basketball team survived a surprisingly game Wisconsin Badgers team on Sunday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisc.

The Huskies beat the Badgers 91-86 in overtime and improved to 18-6 overall this season and 8-5 in the Big Ten.

Before Washington came back to win against its Midwest rivals in the extra period, Wisconsin had the advantage on its home court.

The Huskies went almost the entire first quarter without having the lead. A layup from sophomore UW guard Devin Coppinger with 12 seconds left in the opening frame gave Washington its first advantage — an 18-17 lead going into the second quarter.

In a flip of fortunes from the first quarter, the Badgers scored a bucket to retake the lead with 9:47 left in the first half.

From that point, it was all Huskies. They led by as much as nine points and went into halftime with a 44-38 advantage. Junior guard Sayvia Sellers hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the first half to send the Dawgs into the break with the six-point advantage.

Sellers was one of three double-digit scorers for Washington. She finished with 23 points on 7-for-13 shooting, pulled in three rebounds, dished five assists and swiped four steals.

In the third quarter, the Huskies maintained their advantage and led 59-49 with 3:54 left until the fourth.

Unwilling to let the visitors cruise to victory, Wisconsin went on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter with a 60-59 lead.

After a back-and-forth fourth, the Badgers led 75-71 with 2:33 left in regulation. Sellers hit a floater and senior guard Hannah Stines hit two free throws from that point to send the game to overtime.

In a representation of the previous four quarters in regulation, Wisconsin and Washington kept going back and forth, with the Badgers having an 86-85 lead with 1:09 left in the game.

Sophomore guard Avery Howell accounted for four points, one on a layup and two from the free-throw line, and Sellers hit two shots of her own from the charity stripe to secure the victory for the Huskies.

Howell finished the game with a game-high 34 points on a 12-for-19 mark from the floor. She also had 14 rebounds to clinch the double-double in addition to two assists and a steal.

Washington will continue its Midwest road trip with a showdown against the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes at 4:30 p.m. PT on Feb. 11 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
