SEATTLE — The No. 25 Washington Huskies women's basketball team extended its win streak to three games with an 81-65 win against the Penn State Nittany Lions on Jan. 21 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
The Huskies improved to 15-4 overall on the season and 5-3 in Big Ten competition.
Through the first quarter, Washington looked to be cruising to its third-straight win.
The Huskies pulled out to a 21-11 lead through the first 10 minutes. Freshman forward Brynn McGaughy was responsible for 10 of those points on 5-for-5 shooting. She finished with 14 points on a 7-for-12 mark from the floor and pulled in nine rebounds.
Many of McGaughy's points came from the elbow — a shot that the five-star freshman has attempted several times this year but wasn't able to convert efficiently before facing the Nittany Lions.
"It was fun," McGaughy said after the game. "If they're sagging off, just (shoot) that shot. Coach (Tina Langley) has really talked to me about making (the elbow) my area. It was a good chance to really work on it in-game today."
In the second quarter, Penn State launched a comeback and briefly took the reins of the game back from Washington.
The Nittany Lions went on a 13-0 run from five minutes, 55 seconds left in the second quarter to 2:45 left in the first half. Penn State led 33-31 after the run.
UW outscored Penn State 7-4 in the final 2:37 to go into halftime with a 38-37 lead.
With 6:14 left in the third quarter, neither side was able to pull away and the game was knotted 44-44.
The Huskies slowly began to pull away with respective 4-0 runs and a 5-0 run and went into the final 10 minutes of the game with some breathing room and a 60-51 advantage.
"I thought that we came out and understood who Penn State is and the way they play," Langley said in a postgame interview. "Made some adjustments in-game. I think that's very hard to do sometimes live and we're getting better at that."
Junior guard Sayvia Sellers scored nine of her 24 points in the third quarter and 15 of those points in the second half overall. She reached that mark on a 10-for-15 mark from the floor. She also added three rebounds, three assists and a block.
"The way Sayvia attacked the basket was really special tonight," Langley said. "She never settled. She kept getting into people and understanding the pace. She's attacking the basket with great pace, always under control."
Washington pulled away for good in the fourth quarter.
A 7-0 Huskies run from 5:07 to 3:50 in the fourth bolstered their lead to 76-58. Washington was able to maintain a similar distance for the rest of the game for the 16-point triumph.
Sophomore guard Avery Howell joined McGaughy and Sellers in double-digits. She scored 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting (3-for-7 beyond the arc; 2-for-3 from the free-throw line). She also pulled in 12 rebounds, dished two assists and swiped three steals. It was her fourth double-double of the season.
Washington will next play on the road against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 11 a.m. PT on Jan. 25 in Piscataway, N.J.
