The Washington Huskies women's basketball team earned its first NCAA tournament win in nearly a decade on Friday.
The sixth-seeded Huskies advanced to the Round of 32 via a dominant 72-54 win over the 11th-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. It was Washington's first NCAA tournament win since 2017 and head coach Tina Langley's first tourney win in three different trips to the dance.
Washington will have an opportunity to make the Sweet 16, also for the first time since 2017, with a win in its next game against the third-seeded TCU Horned Frogs at 7 p.m. PT on Sunday, also at Schollmaier Arena.
Here's a preview of the Huskies' matchup against the Horned Frogs:
Sophomore guard Avery Howell had a career night against the Jackrabbits on Friday.
Howell scored 30 points, which included a season-best seven 3-point makes on 13 attempts and added nine rebounds.
Howell became the first Washington player since multi-time WNBA champion Kelsey Plum to score at least 20 points and convert at least five 3-point attempts in an NCAA tournament game. Plum accomplished that feat in that special 2017 campaign.
Multi-time National Player and Big Ten Player of the Week Sayvia Sellers took a backseat to Howell's 3-point barrage but still made an impact. She scored four points, pulled in five rebounds, swiped three steals and dished a single-game career-high 10 assists.
Sellers is UW's leading scorer this season. She's averaging 18 points across 32 games on 48.1% shooting. She's also averaging 3.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
TCU is entering this game coming off its own dominant win.
The Horned Frogs dismantled the 14th-seeded UC San Diego Tritons 86-40 on Friday. In that game, senior guard Taylor Bigby led the way with 27 points on 8-for-10 shooting.
Four other TCU players scored in double-figures against UC San Diego: senior forward Marta Suarez (11 points), sophomore center Clara Silva (13 points), senior guard Olivia Miles (12 points) and senior guard Veronica Sheffey (12 points).
It should be noted that Miles is the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Langley's first-ever win in the NCAA tournament Friday gave her a 1-2 record all-time in March Madness. Her first tournament berth (and loss) was with the Rice Owls in 2019. Washington lost a 'First Four' game in 2025. She has a 209-131 record as a head coach with the Huskies and Owls, and an 83-70 record with Washington.
Mark Campbell led the Horned Frogs to the Elite Eight in just his second year heading the program last season and is looking to surpass that metric this go around.
Across his five seasons as head coach of the Sacramento State Hornets and TCU, Campbell has a 123-45 overall mark as a coach, and an 84-21 record with the Horned Frogs.
Campbell is 4-2 in three trips to the NCAA tourney.
This game will be the first matchup between TCU and Washington, according to sports-reference.com.
