SEATTLE — A 20-point double-double from freshman forward Hannes Steinbach and another 20-point performance from sophomore guard Zoom Diallo weren't enough for the Washington Huskies men's basketball team, which fell 90-73 to the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
Diallo had 21 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Steinbach finished the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.
No other player scored in double-figured for the Dawgs. Freshman guard Courtland Muldrew and sophomore center Lathan Sommerville were the next-highest scores after Diallo and Steinbach with seven points apiece.
Not even a halftime ceremony, in which Huskies and Seattle SuperSonics legend Detlef Schrempf's No. 22 was retired, was enough to give UW the necessary energy to overcome the Badgers.
Washington (14-15, 6-12 Big Ten) entered the game with a rotation that was just seven scholarship players deep due to injuries that kept senior center Franck Kepnang, senior forward Jacob Ogancevic and sophomore forward Bryson Tucker out of the game.
Diallo, Steinbach and Huskies head coach Danny Sprinkle, as they have all season, refused to blame injuries for the lack of energy in the first half.
"We got to fight," Diallo said in a postgame interview. "No matter what, we got to fight. At this point, it's just about pride. Who wants it more? Everybody's hurt this time of season. We've been going through it all year. It's sad that (Ognacevic) got hurt. ... But we've been having guys down. ... It's just a part of the game. ... (It's) no excuse to play like we did in the first half."
In the first half, Washington failed to string together a run of more than five consecutive points and had respective periods where it went without a field goal for multiple minutes.
Despite playing with self-admitted lethargy, the Huskies stayed within striking distance and trailed the Badgers 22-14 with 6 minutes, 51 seconds left in the first half.
Washington was held scoreless in the final 2:13 of the first half and Wisconsin put up five points to go into halftime with a 36-21 advantage.
In the second half, the Huskies were able to come out with more energy on offense but failed to make a meaningful dent into their deficit. UW trailed 56-42 with 11:24 remaining in the game.
Wisconsin went on a 10-0 run after that point to bolster its lead to 24. The Badgers led by as much as 28 in the second half.
Washington ended the game on a 7-0 run in the final 1:41 for the 17-point final that wasn't indicative of how dominant the Badgers were throughout the 40 minutes.
Wisconsin senior guard Braeden Carrington scored a game-high 32 points on 9-for-19 shooting. All nine of his makes from the field were from 3-point range. He also went a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line.
Carrington's nine 3-pointers was a program record.
Badgers senior guard Nick Boyd added 22 points on an 11-for-20 clip from the floor.
"Our first half, I thought that was our most selfish first half," Sprinkle said after the game. "And anybody that was in the building saw it. Offensively, we were very, very poor. We took very poor shots. Very poor decisions. You can't do that against a team like Wisconsin. Can't do it against any team. That was the most disappointing. I think our competitive spirit and our togetherness ... it wasn't present."
The Huskies will look to bounce back in a home game against Southern California (USC) at 7:30 p.m. PT on March 4 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
