SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies women's basketball team was unable to pull off senior night magic in a 66-65 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
The Huskies dropped to 19-9 and 9-8 in Big Ten play in the regular season home finale.
Washington didn't allow Nebraska to have the lead for nearly the entire fourth quarter. The Huskies led 63-57 with 4 minutes, 16 seconds left in the game. The Cornhuskers responded with a 6-0 run that knotted the game 63-63 with 1:21 left in the fourth.
Washington junior guard Sayvia Sellers hit a driving layup with 16 seconds left to give her squad the 65-63 lead. Nebraska called a timeout after Sellers' layup with the opportunity for a game-tying or game-winning shot.
The Cornhuskers took advantage of their final possession. Sophomore Nebraska guard Britt Prince hit the go-ahead and game-winning 3-pointer with seven seconds left that resulted in the eventual 66-65 final.
The Huskies had several opportunities to earn the walk-off win. Sellers, freshman guard Brynn McGaughy and sophomore guard Avery Howell all had potential game-winning shot attempts in the final seconds but were unable to convert.
"I just missed the layup," Sellers said after the game. "We had a couple chances. They just were short. In a time like that, there's a lot of pressure to make an easy shot. ... I thought they were all good looks."
Sellers was one of four double-digit scorers for UW. She finished with 14 points on 6-for-15 shooting and added three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
Washington had to work itself back from an early deficit before taking control in the second half.
In the first quarter, a 7-0 Cornhuskers run set the Huskies back 15-6 with 1:39 left in the frame. Washington was able to cut its deficit down to 17-12 going into the second quarter.
Nebraska bolstered its lead to as large as 12 in the second quarter. The Huskies were able to get within two possessions several times and went into halftime trailing 35-32.
Washington opened the second half with a 9-2 run that gave it a 41-37 lead with 7:25 left in the frame. The Cornhuskers tied the game twice in the third after that point, but the Huskies refused to concede the lead until Prince's game-winning triple.
Senior guard Elle Ladine finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal; McGaughy scored 14 points, pulled in nine rebounds, dished two assists and blocked a shot and Howell finished with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double while adding an assist, a block and a steal.
Senior guard Hannah Stines had a near triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
After the game, Washington's seniors — Yulia Grabovskaia, Teagan Brown, Shayla Gillmer, Stines and Ladine were honored in a senior night ceremony.
"I know we all wanted to win for (the seniors) tonight," Huskies head coach Tina Langley said in a postgame interview. "But what I love about them is it's never gonna be about a result. It's always gonna be about how we can be better, how we can be better for one another, how we can be better for Washington, how we can be better for our community. Thank you for your example ... in wins and losses."
Washington will conclude its regular season with against the Oregon Ducks at a to-be-determined time on March 1 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.
