The most promising season since 2016-17 for the Washington Huskies women's basketball team came to an end Sunday.
The sixth-seeded Huskies fell 62-59 to the third-seeded TCU Horned Frogs in a Round of 32 game at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. A potential game-tying 3-pointer from Washington junior guard Sayvia Sellers fell short with five seconds left and TCU secured to rebound to ice the three-point win.
As the overtime period would suggest, the game was closely-contested throughout with both teams trading advantages throughout the 40 minutes of regulation and five minutes of OT.
In the first quarter, the Horned Frogs were able to find the first advantage. They outscored the Huskies by a bucket and went into the second quarter with a 13-11 lead.
The second quarter marked the most impressive defensive showcase of the night, which belonged to Washington.
The Huskies held TCU to just six points while the former put up 16. The Dawgs' stout defensive efforts sent them into halftime with a 27-19 lead.
TCU managed to cut their deficit down to 39-36 going into the final 10 minutes of regulation but Washington still was up going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, a 20-foot jumper from freshman forward Brynn McGaughy bolstered the Huskies' lead to 47-40 with six minutes, 19 seconds left in the game.
The Horned Frogs promptly responded with a 7-0 run that knotted the game 47-47 with 3:57 remaining.
A layup from Clara Silva with 1:39 left in regulation gave TCU a two-point lead. McGaughy made a layup with 14 seconds left to tie the game 51-51. A last-second 3-point attempt from Horned Frogs senior guard Oliva Miles failed to convert, which forced the game into overtime.
TCU began the overtime period with a 7-0 run that gave it a 58-51 advantage with 3:22 remaining in the extra period.
In a response that was emblematic of the competitiveness of the contest, Washington went on a 6-0 run to pull within one point of the Horned Frogs with 2:06 remaining.
Senior Horned Frogs guard Taylor Bigby made a layup with 1:06 left that further put the Huskies back 62-57.
Sellers made a 10-foot jumper with 42 seconds remaining, which pulled her team within three points and set her up for her, ultimately, fruitless 3-point attempt.
Sellers was one of four players to score in double-figures for Washington. She scored a team-high 18 points on 7-for-22 shooting (3-for-9 from 3-point range), pulled in six rebounds, dished five assists and had a steal.
Sophomore Huskies guard Avery Howell put up 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting (3-for-5 from beyond the arc). She also had eight boards and three assists.
McGaughy had 13 points on a 5-for-9 mark, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Senior guard Hannah Stines rounded out Washington's double-digit scorers. She had 10 points on a 4-for-10 mark from the floor, three rebounds, an assist and two steals.
The defeat gave Washington a final record of 22-11 this season.
