The University of Washington men's basketball team needed overtime, but they ultimately got it done on Wednesday afternoon, beating Southern California in its opening game of the Big Ten Conference tournament in Chicago.
The No. 12 Huskies toppled the No. 13 Trojans 83-79, beating them for the second time in as many weeks. Washington is now 16-16 on the season while USC falls to 18-14.
With the win, Danny Sprinkle's team will advance to day three of the tournament. They will play No. 5 Wisconsin, who has yet to play. Game one of the day between No. 9 Iowa and No. 8 Ohio State tips off at 9 a.m. PT and the Huskies will follow 25 minutes after the conclusion.
Here's what you need to know:
--Freshman Hannes Steinbach, who was just named to the third-team All-Big Ten team, had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Though his scoring output was lower than usual, it was his 21st double-double of the campaign.
--Zoom Diallo led the way with 22 points, connecting on 7-of-20 from the floor.
--Quimari Peterson and Wesley Yates III each had 15 points, with Peterson hitting each of his buckets from the three-point line.
--UW hit 11 threes in the win, shooting 38 percent.
--Washington was down 11 at one point in the second half before rallying.
--The Trojans, playing without leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara, shot 45 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three, though they made only seven triples.
--USC struggled at the foul line, going just 10-of-18 (56 percent).
--Five players were in double-figures for USC, including Kam Woods, who had 24.
The Badgers are currently 22-9 on season, and they went 12-6 inside Big Ten play. They beat Washington 90-73 in Seattle on Feb. 28. Braeden Carrington had 32 points, hitting nine-three pointers along the way.
The record could be even better for Wisconsin, but they lost to USC by two and Indiana by one this season.
If there's something that can make Washington feel confident in this one, it's that Wisconsin did lose to Oregon, who finished No. 16 in the Big 10. They also lost to USC.
After being out of the college game for the last two seasons, former University of Washington men's basketball coach Mike Hopkins is drawing interest again as the next hiring cycle approaches.
According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, Hopkins is in the mix for the job at Syracuse University, which just fired head coach Adrian Autry after three seasons on Wednesday morning. The Orange went 15-17 and were eliminated in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament on Tuesday.
