Washington's Woes Continue in 64-60 Loss Against Maryland cover image

The Huskies dropped back below .500 in a close loss against the Terrapins

The Washington Huskies men's basketball team kicked off their final five-game stretch of the season with a the first of a two-game east coast road trip Friday at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md.

The Huskies failed to find success in the first contest of their eastward voyage and fell 64-60 to the Maryland Terrapins.

Washington fell to 13-14 on the season and 5-11 in Big Ten play with the defeat.

The Huskies opened the game on a strong note and looked to be controlling the tempo against the Terrapins.

Washington came out the gate strong and led 11-3 with 15 minutes, 36 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore guard Wesley Yates III was responsible for seven of those points whereas fellow sophomore guard Zoom Diallo comprised the other four.

Maryland was able to erase that early deficit and took control of the game going into halftime.

After the Huskies bolstered their lead to 11-3, the Terrapins outscored the visitors 17-7 to take a 22-18 lead with 9:13 left in the first half.

Washington was able to tie the game once more in the remaining time before halftime but Maryland was able to go into the break with a 34-32 advantage.

Yates finished the first half with seven of his 12 game points and Diallo put up 10 of his 19.

Yates also added three rebounds, an assist and a a steal and Diallo had four rebounds and five assists.

The Terrapins opened the second half with a layup and the Huskies promptly responded with a run that gave them the lead back.

Washington went on an 8-3 run and led 40-39 with 16:57 left in the game.

Maryland continued to comeback and prevented the Huskies from extending their lead. Washington took the led or tied the game eight times after its 8-3 run.

With 1:26 left in the game, the two sides were tied 60-60.

Yates and senior guard Quimari Peterson both had two shot opportunities in the final minute-and-a-half but were unable to convert.

Freshman Terrapins guard Andre Mills scored four points in that final stretch to secure the four-point win for Maryland.

Freshman Huskies forward Hannes Steinbach put up 12 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the floor, pulled in three rebounds, dished two assists and blocked a shot.

Washington will wrap up its east coast road trip in a game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 3:30 p.m. PT on Feb. 24 at Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J.
